EOTECH - Why so expensive?

I'm not a novice but somehow my experiences have not exposed me to any real knowledge of the Eotech line of sighting systems. I'm under the impression they are the "cat's meow" for the AR but I haven't heard or read enough to understand what makes them so good and what is the reason for the high cost and a non-traditional appearance?

night vision compatible.  beyond that it is a case of ford falcon vs vette both will get you there but one will impress more people.
