.308 Bull Barrel Survivor
« on: July 29, 2009, 09:16:45 AM »
Greetings all. Just purchased a .308 bull barrel survivor in 22". The bull barrel dosent seem as "bull" as the .223 bull that I have. Meaning it isnt as big around in size. Also, the .223 I thought was a 22" barrel but when measured it reads to 24". Any thoughts??

Welcome! The 223 comes in several variants, one of which is the 24" Ultra, see H&R's website, bull barrels are ~ .800" at the muzzle.

As far as barrels. just two, the bull barrel and standard contour ~.650" at the muzzle, both 22".

I'm betting I ended up with a standard. Although the survivor should come with the bull. I'll have to measure it when I get home.

It may be a Survivor stock on a Handi/Ultra, ALL H&R stocks will interchange on all of their single shots with the exception of some of the forends on shotguns.

Im assuming that that is not how it comes from the factory or store new. It would have had to have been done by somebody wouldn't it? Or is it possible that they sell the survivor that way as well??

The Survivor 308 has always been factory issued with a bull barrel, but there are hundreds of members here that swap stocks all the time, I've got 46 H&Rs, over half have different stocks than came on them originally,  see the H&R Classified forums for example of the stock swapping that goes on.  ;D Here's a pic of my 308 Survivor.....er ....308 Ultra bull barrel, which they don't sell.

Tim,

I guess what's wierd is I bought what I though was the survivor bull barrel from a reputable dealer and to me it looks like it isn't a bull barrel. Thus my questions. When I first saw it I had my doubts but when I got it home and checked it out with my .223 bull barrel I was all but sure it wasn't a bull barrel. So I guess my question is do they sell the suvivor .308 with no bull barrel or has there been a switch pulled on me?

The stock has been swapped, it's a special order, or the factory screwed up and put the wrong barrel on it. Do the numbers marked on the left side of the underlug match the last few numbers of the frame serial number?

I'll measure the barrel when I get home tonight and check the serial numbers and get back to you on that. Not sure where you mean by the underlug. I assume taking off the barrel and looking under there somewhere. I got two more hours of service then I can check it out.

Taking off a barrel is a simple 15 second operation. Take off the forend screw, open the action, roll the forend off and wiggle the barrel loose. A factory fitted barrel has 3 digits electropenciled on the lug that match the last 3 digits of the serial number on the receiver.

Recent production barrels have the last 4 digits stamped on the left side of underlug which is the part of the barrel the extractor is housed in.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time they changed things without updating the website. ::) FWIW, the #808 308 bull barrel is still listed on the acc barrel list.

Okay so I got home and here is the skinny. The last 3 serial numbers and the 3 numbers on the underlug match. The barrel measures ~.650 and my .223 barrel is ~.800. Therefore, it is not a bull barrel as I had hoped for but the question is did they change things up or has there been a switch with the stock and forend??

Either they changed the model specs, or the screwed up, I'd call H&R and ask em, toll free (866)776-9292, it was made May 2008 or later, is it marked made in Ilion or Gardner?

Tim,

So I called them and they said it is some kind of low profile bull barrel. He says evidently they have changed it. I asked when they changed it and he couldnt answer it? He didnt seem to willing to get to the nuts and bolts of it and I could only imagine how much time it would take to get the answer. I guess my question is I see a bull barrel offered in the classifieds section but how complicated or what needs to be done to fit that to my reciever??

Barrel fitting is in the FAQs and Help sticky along with a million other things you need to know!!  ;D You can also send it in for an accessory barrel if they have them in stock.

Can a gunsmith pull this off without a hitch?? This might be more than I am willing to tackle. Also what kind of results has this produced? I imagine this has been done by lots of guys but does it affect accuracy and saftey of the firearm?? Or am I just blowing this out of purportion and this is an easy deal for the right person doing it?

I've fitted a couple dozen of mine, some take a lot of change, some lock right up, many need just a little fitting at the latch shelf or some removed from the barrel face to fit. Any competent gunsmith could do it, H&R will fit second hand barrels IF there's enough material to work with, they won't shim, they will cut the pivot to fit if they can.

I checked with H&R, the spec for the SB2-608 Survivor 308(confirm that model number on the box end sticker just in case) still calls for a bull barrel which should measure ~.800", if yours is only .650", you should contact H&R and ask for them to resolve the issue, they should replace the barrel with the proper barrel in which case you'll have to return the rifle to Ilion, ask them to cover the return shipping.  ;)

Wish I had the box still. I'll check with the dealer where I purchased it.
