another satisfied MU breech plug owner
« on: July 10, 2009, 02:18:18 PM »
I have a buddy who was shooting a black diamond.  He is getting tired of the work it takes to take it down for a cleaning.  Anyway to make a long story short I found him a nice 26 inch barrel sidekick at my local gun shop and he traded last week.  He brought it over and I fixed him up with a hubbards rod I had purchased for a 26 inch barrel and did not have a 26 inch barrel.  He has a 7/8 breech plug in the sidekick he purchased.  It came with the original breech plug and wrench.  We got the plug out and cleaned it up and reassembled the gun.  When it came time to put the breech plug back in, I mentioned he did not have any orange primer carriers and would not be able to shoot it unless he purchased some.  Keep in mind this was a ploy to get the mu plug in his gun.  After we brain stromed a bit I showed him the plug. I have two one for each gun I have a sidekick and a huntsman barrel on my 243 frame and I have a 25 acp plug also.  All I told him about the plug was eliminated the carriers and the price.  Well we lubed it up and put it in his gun. He liked the idea of a socket to put it in and out also.

We went today and shot his gun.  The first thing he noticed was how the spent primers some out of the gun so clean and they popped right out with his fingers and he did not need a tool to remove them.  I pointed out how the action stays clean also.  With 90 grains of triple 7 ffg and some 250 grain shockwaves, he was dialed in very nicely at 60 yards.  He was so happy he wanted to buy the plug.  Knowing that would be his reaction, I ordered one from mu yesterday and Bob there assured me it was to be sent out today. He handed me 30 bucks and went home very happy. He planned to take pics of the target after he got home and mail them to me.  If he does, I will post them.

Agree with bubba. Wouldn't even consider going back to the primer carrier type plug.

MY new MU plug is awesome!

Very satisfied also! Fast turnaround on order, two days. one thing for sure, I got to get some BH209. At the range I only had T7 allthough very accurate with two different full bore bullets, .5 at 50yd. the plug stuck even with it never siesed. Fired one more round to heat up barrel and thanks to the 1/2" nut removed the plug. I still had a little bit of a crud ring that swabing after each shot took care of. I was amazed at how clean the spent primers come out! Thanks Nick for a great product. Can't wait to get some BH209 and try the plug out.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

I guess the MU plug is okay............. ::)

at least at 100 yds.....

all kidding aside,
-I've forgotten about
-latch getting dirty
-scope, base and ring getting dirty
-plug requiring ten thousand foot pounds to loosen

I really like the ones I bought.  They work great with BH209.

I tried 90 gr FFFg T7, 250 gr XTP, Harvester sabot, vari-flame adapters with CCI small rifle primers
and the accuracy was also good.  I shot about 10 times before I had to pack it in for the day.  I only
used T7 this trip out.  When I went to clean it that night, I had a real hard time removing the breech plug.
The flat area below the threads on the barrel was caked up with T7 residue.  I use Knight breech plug grease.
Anyone else try this plug with T7, how was it to remove the plug?

I use strictly Pyrodex RS, I'm not as rich as Busta  (however if I did use BH209 just the price of patches I don't have to use would probably make up the difference in price), but I don't use that Knight bp grease, I do have some. I just use the
teflon tape now.

I did notice yesterday my primer hole is getting somewhat oblong.  or out of round.

how about we just call it oval shaped.    ;D

That does not sound good John :o Is it at the mouth of the primer pocket? How many rounds do you figure you have put through it?

Thanks
Nick

Nick, appreciate your concern, I'm pretty sure we're gonna be alright,

I took some pics just now but they aren't very good, and the sun is dropping quick.

I think it is just flaring of the extended part, caused by me and my depriming tool.

I'm probably over a hundred shots at this point.  I need to be a little easier about wedging those

primers out.

My buddy and I use triple 7 exclusively.  I remove the plug as soon as I am done shooting and have not had a problem getting it out with a 1/4 drive ratchet and socket.  I use the t17 breech plug grease from t/c.  I use 90 grains with a 250 grain lead bullet I mold and harvestor crush rib sabots.  I have found if you remove the plug while it is warm from shooting, it comes right out.
