alloy question
« on: August 22, 2009, 08:44:15 AM »
I'm making up about 35 lbs. of alloy for high speed rifle. My recipe is 30 lbs. ww, 1 roll of mystery solder,(maybe 3 lbs.?) and 2 1/2 lbs of #1 babbit metal, ASTM 23. Anybody take a guess at the bhn? Thanks.

no but your sure wasting alot of tin. about one lb of your solder or babbit added to your ww is plenty. Anymore is a waste. tin doesnt add hardness (at least very much hardness) Its antimony that adds hardness. If your mixing your tin like that youd be better off swapping some of it for linotype. Its worth about 3 times what lineotype is worth.

Thanks for the info Lloyd. Well, it's in the muffin pans now, I'll use it to add to a lot more ww. Guess I better do the math.

Most people will tell you that adding more then 3 percent tin is a waste. Ive found in these days of crap wheel weights and the possiblility of slight zinc comtamination so alloys i make up do a bit better at about 5 percent but id start a 3 percent and see how that does first.
