Favorite 7mm-08 powders?
« on: July 10, 2009, 06:35:33 PM »
I finally put together a 7mm-08 setup and was wondering what your favorite powders were. I will be shooting the 140gr Accubond and the 140gr Nosler BT to start out with. I have a lot of Varget and have put some unfired tests rounds together. What are your best results in this caliber? The rifle will be used for mule deer, pronghorn, and an occasional coyote.

varget and 140 grain sierra game kings works great in my encore rifle.

Burntmuch, thats funny, IMR 4064 is the best powder I have found for the daughter's Model 7 7mm08.  Shooting a 139 grain Hornady bullet it will put three shots touching at 100 yds.

My 700 vls in 7-08 loves IMR 4895 for both 100gr HP's and 140gr Sierra Gamekings. Have also had good results with 4064 as well.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have loaded 36 rounds with Varget and will try that first as I have quite a lot of it. I might also try the Barnes TTSX bullets later on as I have heard many good things about them. I have tested them in one of my .308's and they have been very accurate.

I bought a great grandson a NEF in 7mm-08 w/ 20 gauge barrel to follow up the .22 LR NEF I taught him to shoot with.  I need loading data for 100 grain Sierra bullets to produce some VERY mild loads.  Maybe using Blue Dot, Unique or Red Dot to produce some ammunition that would be accurate but not shake up a small lad.  I want him to learn to shoot before we move up to game loads.

Varget, W760, & H414 are three good ones.

Technically speaking only two good ones as W760 and H414 are the same powder like W296/H110.

OK I can now say IMR 4350 works good in my 7mm08. I loaded up some rounds Went out back with the girls Long story short 60 yards 3 shot groups 2 touching 1 flyer inch to right. started to pay attention to which shot was the flyer. It was always the 3rd shot. After 2 shots that thin little 18 inch barrel is real hot /So my last group I waited 4-5 min beteen shots . 3 holes ALMOST touching. I can live with that / I cant move back to 100 yards till I get a scope for the girls .22

Yes, IMR 4895.  It is very versatile, can be loaded down for light recoil, up for speed, and all seem to group pretty well.  To be honest, surplus would probably work just as well, I just don't have experience there.

I did buy some H4895 accidentally in the midst of my hoarding ;D, but I haven't shot it yet.  Probably, again, a great powder, I am waiting for a chance to open the can.

I have had great luck with IMR 4350 and W760 in my 7mm-08 which is a M700 with a Wiseman medium heavy 23 inch bbl. It is very accurate.

I load 46gr of H4350 behind a 140gr CoreLokt for my 7600. It may not be the best load or powder for a 7mm-08 but in my rifle it shoots to almost the same point of impact as 140gr Remiington ammo so that's what I use. Before the ammo hording I could go to WalMart and get a box of ammo if needed.

looks like she's easy to please, the 7mm-08

I started out with H380 but ended up using H335, all with good results.

I would love to try some N-150 or whatever is the right vetavitavegamin powder for 7mm-08 if I could find out where to get it

The best load I've worked up is IMR 4350 and a 140 grain Nosler BT out of my Encore. Sub MOA if I do my part.

Thank you for all the responses ... I really appreciate it. Lots of different recipes offered up. I do think the 7mm-08 has a pretty loyal following.

Bottom line - the 7mm-08 is a very good and very flexible cartridge. It is capable of great accuracy with a wide variety of loads. Nearly anything will shoot very well in mine and some loads are outstanding.
