357 range report
« on: July 25, 2009, 10:34:28 AM »
Every time I shoot my 357 Handi "parts gun" it amazes me....wood stock and schnabel forend i bought in the classifieds,357 barrel i bought in the classifieds, Topper frame from a shotgun my deceased friend gave to me, and a Leupold I horse-traded for. Been shooting a target load i came up with at 50 yards....moved the target to 100 yds, turned up the scope power a little, and the first two targets had 3 touching then my friend gave me a box of Federal 158 gr Hydra shoks and they made a 3 shot triangle about 1 ".......pretty good for a parts gun....

Nice shooting ;D All the 357's just seem to shoot well - parts gun or not. 1" groups at 100 yards ain't too shabby either. ;)

I have two 357 barrels. One replaced a bad 500 MAG and the other is on a 158 Hornet frame. I Have shot both @ 25 yds to begin zeroing.
IT FEELS REAL GOOD TO KNOW IN 5 SHOTS YOU ARN'T GOING TO HAVE TO WORK ON A (both) GUN TO HAVE A REAL GOOD SHOOTER. YIPPPPPPIIIIIIEEEEEE!!!!!

That "favorite rifle" thing is giving me trouble.  I wake up at night hearing grumblings around the house.  The .45-70 wants to stay favorite.  The .357 Max knows he's got him seriously challenged, and the .44 Mag. wants to team up with a sister Super Mag and run both of them out of town :o  Woe is me :'(

I gotta agree with Stimpy.  My .357s always liked bullets from l58 gr. to 180 gr.  I couldn't hit squat with 125 in either .357 or.38.  They were all factory loads.

Good shootin Zoner Ya gotta love the .357.

BTW,
125s don't shoot as well as 158 and up bullets do out of any of my .357s, Most of mine prefer the 180 grain loads.  The only 125s I use are for plinking at low speeds and usually with lead bullets, 148 WCs shoot very well at low speed but 158 and up is for me.

when i put this gun together the only bullets i could find were 158 gr RNL at a local store so i bought 500 of em,used some 231 in em cuz it's what i had....tried the factory max load(6.5 grs) and it was in the black but didn't group well, lowered the charge 1 gr and they went into a triangle less than an inch...the SECOND load i tried. My buddy handed me 3 Federal Hydra shoks Saturday and i got a triangular 1 inch group at 100yds,i was so happy he gave me two boxes of 20(for now my hunting ammo). I think i invested a grand total of $130 bucks in this gun...i owned the reciever and scope and bought the barrel and stocks here. My bolt gun buddies ribbed me some when i first showed up with it,now they are trying to get their 8-900 dollar bolt guns to shoot as good as my parts gun ;)

If you load up 125's, I found that they shoot better at low pressure than they do at high pressure. I read some where when they are shot at high pressure, they distort and do not fly right.

My experience with shallow rifled barrels in general is that they prefer bullets with longer bearing surfaces.. I have also found that, as one other poster stated, shorter bullets shoot better at lower pressures. Inconsistancies in barrel ID have something to do with that I think.

Zoner thats some good shooting , I Already miss my 357 ( had the schnable stock and ejector barrel) it too was a shooter ;)

Gen ,

Play with the 140gr bullets and IMR 4227 .. I had some awesome luck with that powder bullet wieght , Thou i dont recollect what the exact charge was , It would run out at just shy of 1900 fps and was only 3/8 high @ 50 and dead money @ 100..
Just a few days i planned to try and get lined out these 180 gr remmie semi jacketed hollow points for the missus' Win 94 AE lever gun with a 16 1/2 barrel , the load i came up with is 13.5 gr of Win. 296 and the afore mentioned remmington projectile , This is a max load in two of my manuals .. So treat it apropreately.. It was grouping them 1 3/4 @ 100 so not two shabby , Think that would get the other half a deer ;)

 Good luck with it brother,
