I'm think'n about buy'n a encore, need info plz.
« on: July 28, 2009, 03:12:58 PM »
I been eyeballin encores for a few years now and in the course of lookin and askin sevral owners ther have been a couple people that have made remarks about the accuracy,   one guy said that he could only get his groups as small as a half dollar at 100 yds.  I dont know him enuff to comment on his shootin or reloadin skills but he seems to be up to snuff.    Another close friend that shhots competition said  "they shhot good enuff to hunt with ".   My question is what kind of accuracy can I expect from this gun??    I've owned a couple handi rifles and really liked them but love to have a encore.  Just lookin for some food for thought.

I own 3 Encores(.257 Roberts, 209x50,and .17 Rem) and each one shoots sub moa.
They are all T/C barrels also
I am in the process of buying my 4th Encore in .338 Federal.
My advice is....................BUY ONE!!
They are like Lay's potato chips......No one can own just one!!!

If your looking to shot .100" groups buy a 40x. If your looking to shoot .500"-.750" (hand load) groups the Encore will do the job.

Guy either love them or hate them, same as any other gun.

The only problem is your going to want to buy 4-12 barrels for it  ;)

Accuracy is pretty bad.  The best I've been able to get out of mine is dime sized groups.

Just put together my first t/c encore pro hunter stainless camo thumbhole stock cabalas pine ridge tactical turret scope 6-18x40,shooting hornady  .223 factory ammo 55gr fmjbt, I have been able to put together ¼ moa groups @ 1oo yd. and have killed 3 grounhogs 1@ 100yd 1@ 225 and 1@278 all hit with a laser range finder first. It’s a great set-up. Range click yardage on turret find a steady rest and fire and have every confidence the hog or what ever you are aiming at will die. This is by far the most accurate rifle I ever owned right out of the box. Can’t wait start hand loading for it will be a tack driver, next barrel ,7mm rem mag my personal favorite big game load that should shoot just as well. This could be the last gun I will ever buy, but not the barrel I will need many more! My advice, pull the trigger, you may too fall in love with a single shot, quality built firearm.

This is almost PORN!!!    I'm foamin at the mouth.   A local gun store has gotta 22/250 in wood and blue ( which I'd druther have ) for $549,  they also gotta 243 pro hunter but it's stainless.    I've heard stainless dont shoot quite good as a carbon steel barrel which I dont have any hands on with so I cant make that call,   but I just like a nice lusterous blue.  (pant, pant, pant)     I just gotta figure out how to break it to my wife, OH got it!! , IT's ya'lls fault.

Who ever told you that is wrong.  There is no reason that a stainless barrel can't be just as good as blued steel.  It is all in what you want.  I am buying stainless these days when I can because it seems to always rain or snow when I hunt.  You still have to clean and oil them, but they don't start to rust while you are in the field.

If I can get some more input on the stainless subject it mite be somthin to consider, but I'd have to wrap that brite shiny barrel.  A 243 with that long pro hunter barrel should be a tack driver.

I have two TC pistols and three Rem rifles in stainless.  They do not shine at all.  I suppose if I polished them or something, I could get them to shine again.  I just wipe the exterior of mine with a slightly oiled cloth.  They will develop a  patina after time.  I have a Shilen barrel that is now very dull.

To me the bright silver color of the stainless would attract attention.   But I have seen a ruger ( I think it was )  that had a darker tone, almost a charcol color.   I'm not refering to a polished shine, but to me the bright appearence mite make it easier for game to pick up on movement if you had to adjust your shootin position.    Just my thought.

While for a good price I will buy blue, I much prefer stainless steel guns.  If you're really concerned about shine, and you needn't be, there are various coatings that can be applied to stainless to completely remove the shine.  A coating I particularly like was a black mil spec coating applied to a stainless steel barrel by SSK Industries.

The fear that game will pick up the shine of a stainless steel gun is, in my opinion, unfounded.  I once sat down in the woods with a stainless steel Encore with my back to a tree wearing a blaze orange jacket.  Two deer came out of the brush and up the hill toward me.  I shot them both (each DRT) so close I could have hit them with a rock (probably 10 to 15 yards).

There was a guy who posted somewhere on GBO a couple years ago a URL to a web page that talked about how stainless steel is inferior because of the inclusion of sulpher in the microstructure to make it free machining.  In effect the metal contains millions of tiny cracks that allow chips to break away when machining is going on.  It was like many other assertions, an ad for a company that sold steel barrels and was intended to convince folks not to buy the stainless blanks.  While they were correct about the microstructure, it did not have the bad effect claimed.  Some fine barrels are made from stainless, by some fine makers.  Many of my Contender barrels are stainless, and none have cracked apart yet...

Based on my experience the Encore and Contenders they can be as accurate or better than most production bolt rifles. As with most rifles, production or custom,  well tailored handloads are the key to the best accuracy. On the other hand the most accurate rifles made  may not be accurate without proper shooting and loading techniques.

If I'm worried about the gun being seen, I'll wrap a strip of old frazeled burlap around the front half of the gun just for a way break up the outline and hide the shine.   works for me.

Well here’s my two cents worth,
Stainless is stiffer = less barrel whip. It stands up to all types of environments. It has no blue which could act as an insulation, stainless cools quicker, and as for a deer or any other animal seeing it ,look at your camo it has gray branches and other shapes of gray. That’s how deer will see it. Thompson shot blasts their barrels giving a dull gray appearance; it has less shine than a blue barrel. Meaning less light reflection, which will get you, busted every time. Imho the only reason to buy blue finish would be the cost factor. Try hunting for Alaskan bear from a boat, you can almost watch your gun rust from the salt. I saw it happen to my Weatherby, less than 2 hours out of the case it was developing rust. But also remember that stainless is not care free it will pit if neglected. In my safe I have blue, black, and stainless. But I don’t recall seeing any thing but stainless showing up lately. I think it was the bear trip thing that did it! You can not go wrong with the pro hunter in stainless; I have one and love it!!! So, talk to the wife buy the pro hunter and be happy!

I understand what your sayin about the color blendin in,  I was lookin thru a magazine today and it had a picture of a hunter sitin on a rock with his rifle slung across his back.   The color of the rifle matched the rocks and tree limbs pretty good, that got me to ponderin on my thoughts the bright finish of stainless.   Maybe I need to reconsider,  deer see in black and white anyway so if the finish aint polished  it's probably not gonna be that easily seen.

If I can get the particular gun I want in Stainless-Steel, that is what it will be.

I have sat in a ground blind in the Mud Lake Bottom near my home watching the meadows. I would say about 90% of the time I spot a hunter off in the distance it was the glar from the sun hitting their shiney blued rifle barrel. There have been instances I spotted the reflection of the sun hitting their shiney blued before I noticed their blaze orange.

I just purchased a Stainless-Steel T/C Encore Rifle Frame. My barrel hasn't arrived as yet but it to is stainless-steel. As I stated if the particular gun I want is available in both blued & stainless-steel I will buy the stainless-steel version every time.

That's been my experience in the outdoors too. It's not the color of something so much as it's reflection of light that catches an animal's attention. Even something transparent and very small diameter like mono fishing line can be seen from incredible distances when the light reflects off it the right way.
