whats your favorite handload for .357mag
« on: August 02, 2009, 02:28:38 PM »
after various tests, i have found great load data for the mag
with 158gr-pfn  and 125gr-pfn bullets
please keep in mind that these loads are under sammi max specs...

125gr pfn    18gr imr-4227   col-1.590   1949 fps   starting load (most accurate load)

158gr pfn    15gr imr-4227   col-1.580   1610 fps (most accurate load)

the 125gr groups well in .91-.72 @ 50yrds and 1.9-1.2 @ 100yrds 5-shot

the 158gr groups excellent  .52-.39 @ 50yrds  and  .72-.55 @ 100yrds 5-shot

i have read where the 125's did not hold together well...but i guess it all depends on the bullet your loading
and how you load it.

both bullets are pfn....plated flat nose

shoot'n from a strap steady lead sled

my search is done now.

lets hear what you guy's are load'n.....

don't really care for maxi info, cus i have that in a custom #1 ruger thats an animal of its own !!!
and it really likes what it eats, we won't go there........ ;D

on to my next project!!!!!!!! ;D

sea-ya.....
in tha meen time, i'm wait'n for tha  7th trumpet ta sound !!!

gotta big green tractor ana diesel truck, my idea of heaven's chasin whitetail bucks and asa country boy, you know i can survive............

hey boy, hit this mason jar one time...

My alltime favorite load for both of my 357's, Rossi '92 and Handi.  180grfngc(LBT ) on top of a boatload of LilGun for north of 1800fps, and a 158gr fn cast on top of 7 grains of unique for a plinking load.   hth   Doug

When I was working on a 357 load some years ago I arrived at a couple good ones for my guns. Most are right at max in loading manuals so I wont post weights but here is what my guns like.

S&W 65 3" barrel; 125 Speer GDHP, cci mag pistol and 2400 with a good firm roll crimp.

Colt 8" barrel custom revolver: 140 Speer HP, cci mag pistol and H110 good firm roll crimp.

Marlin 18" carbine lever action: 158 XTP FP cci mag primer and WW296 also with a good firm primp.

I currently use one load for CAS shooting my 357 carbine and revolvers. I have used similar loads with other powders and the same bullet. This is an accurate load, but not intended for big game take down.
150 grain LRN9 as cast from Lee load) over 3.2 grains of Unique OAL 1.5" ;D
