Contender barrels: they seem to multiply!
« on: September 27, 2003, 02:59:23 PM »
Eight weeks ago my son and a worked out a trade which ended up with me getting a .358 JDJ Contender barrel.  Obviously I needed an action, which I had been without since 1988 or so.

After looking around, I purchased a new G-2 action the next day.  The day after that, I went in a gun shop, and found a very good price on a 10" .222 barrel, which lacked a fore end or a tenon. I called Ed's TC, and Ed had a fore end, a tenon, and also a 30/30 barrel I decided I needed.

Now I needed another scope and mount, which Ed also provided.

From there I have been thoroughly enjoying developing loads, sighting in the barrels, etc.

Then today I got a call from a shop I had visited during my original quest. I had left my number there in case a Contender came in.  They had an action, and three 14" barrels: a .44 magnum, a .222, and a 7mm TCU. With the deal came two sets of bases and rings, but only one scope. A call to my son has another scope on it's way to me, and a check on it's way to him.

I'm having fun.

Sounds like someone else has caught TCitis!  My wife is a professional Registered Nurse, and says there is no known cure for it!! :-D    :-D .  Her recommendations are to buy two barrels and go shooting in the morning.

I may be spelling it wrong, but it's the piece that goes into the dovetail on the barrel, that the fore end screws screw into.

The best part of this whole deal is now Dad and I can swap bbls/dies/scopes from the west coast to the east coast without the normal paperwork and headaches.

Fun stuff.

The barrels need to be nestled in a soft, quiet, dark environment.  Bore Stores seem to provide the right atmoshere.
