IT RAINED, IT RAINED!!!! Woke up this morning to a nice shower coming down here in North Pole. Still smoky, funny looking out at the rain and seeing smoke through the rain drops. What we have is an isolated shower they call it at the weather service. But it's washing the ash off stuff. last night we had hot ash falling again. Luckily the falling ash did not start a new fire on this side of the river. Smoke was so thick last night we could only see about 200 to 300 yards. The wife and I stopped at the grocery last night, and as we walked from the car to the front door we get a fine layer of ash on our shoulders and heads. Everyone is wearing mask, even indoors. Some places did not turn their A/C units off and that pulled the smoke and particulates inside the buildings.
So far we have not had to evacuate anything here in Fairbanks or North Pole. But one subdivision about 70 miles south of us is currently under evacuation. They have set up a shelter in the Town of Anderson school. It's a big fire that is between them and fairbanks/North Pole. That's the one that I believe has burned my cabin.
I got concerned when the hot ashes were falling yesterday, afraid they might set off a fire in this area, but with the rain we had this morning that is no longer a problem. My subdivision is surrounded by Black Spruce (Natures Torch).
Slowhanddd: The Palmer, Wasillia, and Anchorage, area have received a lot of smoke I understand from fires North of them. They are in no danger at this time from what the fire service is saying. South Central (the area all the way from Cordova, over to Dillingham, and south of the Alaska Range) has been getting a lot of rain in the last few weeks. Here in the interior the Alaska Range has been blocking the moisture from reaching us. This little shower is the first we have had in five to six weeks. Then it was only a little shower as well. We have had the driest summer on record.
The fire Just North/East of us that had me ready to evacuate has been hit hard by fire crews and slowed down. They are hitting it hard and hope to have it under control soon.
