Any handi's with custom pistol grips
« on: August 06, 2009, 04:40:12 PM »
Here in Indiana we can use pistols with rifle calibers, but no rifles. The barrel has to longer than 4 inchs and shoot a bullet 243cal or bigger, just thinking of making a custom pistol grip for a 308 or 7mm-08 handi and keeping the 22 inch barrel. I have heard people doing this with there Encore rifle/pistol combo. It would be a fun gun to shoot and make a great field hunting gun with a bipod.

Handis  were only sold as complete rifles, which makes that illegal in a very obvious way.

check the ATF website for rules but I believe you can replace the buttstock on a rifle or shotgun with a pistol grip so long as minimum overall length in met. the old handi gun used to have a pistol grip, if you do a web search for it you may be able to see how they looked.

Then it would not be a pistol

Ummm.  Well, you can replace a shotgun stock with a pistol grip as long as the 18" min barrel is maintained.  I don't know if this would be the same as rifles...I would think so. I would kinda be afraid of the recoil of say a 45-70 pistol grip rifle but hey....it's not my wrist! :)
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

Back about 17 or 18 years ago, my friend, M. J. Pike at Duke's Sport Shop in Newberry, MI had a pair of .45-70 revolvers in stock.  They were HUGE.  I can't imagine shooting one for fun.  They both sold, and I often wonder what the buyers actually did with them.  They'd be a wall hanger here :o  I'm not into that much pain.

Any firearm orginally build as a rifle must have a min. barrel length of 16 inches to be legal (varies in some states), however one additional reg. is that it also have a overall length of 26.5 inches. So provided that you meet both of those specs you can put a pistol grip on the gun. Make darn sure that shotgun barrels are 18+ inches and overall length of 26inches, with the exception of a RIFLED 410/45 long colt barrel (must be rifled) can be 16 inchs!!!!

There are very few exceptions to this rule (, some AW rifles with folding stocks have overall length shorter than 26.5 closed but must have an attached buttstock which brings the overall length to over 26.5 inches when open and some firearms are neither rifle or pistols,, along with certain C&R guns)

encore and contender pistols were originally built as pistol frames and can be switched between pistol and rifles....

Oh boy this is tempting me to try the 45-120 with light loads and a pistol grip.  I could screw out the peep thingy and put my head way far back.

Her's a pic of me shooting my 12ga version. For some reason I can't get the pic to attatch. It is just a big boy toy. I can't imagine any real practical use for it. If it Meets the minimum O.A.L. for a rifle wouldn't it cease to be a pistol no matter what grip it had?

I think you should really consider getting a Contender or Encore.  Given the law in your state, and given the federal law regarding converting a rifle to a pistol, the TC is the way to go.

You may be able to put a grip on your Handi and have the  barrel over 16" and  end up with at least 26" OAL, but that would still be a rifle not a pistol.  No go for state hunting law.  You can put a grip on and have a 16" barrel and less than 26" OAL, but then you have converted a rifle to a pistol.  No-go for federal law.

The money you will spend buying a new gun to suit your state's hunting reg is negligable compared to the price of a lawyer in the case your modified Handi doesn't pass muster.  In dollars and cents it's just cheaper to buy a new gun.  See, now you just have to convince your wife you are saving money by going to the gun store and buying a .308 Contender.
