Thinking about buying a'98 mauser in .257 ackley Improved.
« on: October 02, 2003, 05:26:06 PM »
I am going to look at a newly built 98 Mauser rebarreled to .257 Ackley Improved (.257 roberts blown out with 40deg shoulder).  Alledgedly just built up, I don't know what all has been done to it.  I assume D&T, bolt handle, new stock, and safety.  Anyway, asking is $300, so we shall see what it looks like.  Gentleman also has the same in .338, but I am not sure if it's .338-06 or .338 Mag.  Same price. Might buy both if they look OK.

As you can see from my handle I am partial to the 257 Ackley.  They make a great rifle for most situations. A have a new one on a 98 action that I have to get bedded and am anxious to get out and see how it shoots.  Also have aquired a 338-06 Ackley and have to get to the range to see how it will do.  I figure that with these two I can handle about anything on the North American Continent.  If you are a handloader they are great.

tom:  ya'll better get it before I can get my hands on it.  I found great favor with the original 257 Roberts in the mid-60s - took my first coyotes with it, at night with the full moon as a backdrop, and used it fer vermits many times.  Great cartridge and if it is all set to go (minus a little 'personal' effort), $300 is a darn good price.  Same for the 33 bore.  M2C.  Mikey.
