range trip with the 30-06
« on: July 28, 2009, 01:44:00 AM »
I'm new to the Encore pistol deal, so this was my first trip to the range after I got the pistol sighted in. Off the bench I shot a three shot 100 yard group that measured 1 5/8"... don't know if that's good or bad for a pistol but I was pretty pleased with it. Next I tried shooting off of my Stoney Point sticks at a deer target,,, boy was that an eye opener! I'm good out to about 80 yards or so... it's darn hard to hold the cross hairs on target but I did make killing shots three out of four times. I'll do some more practicing before the season comes in, hopefully I'll feel ready.

Good shooting. I need to get mine shot in some time soon.

What grips do you have on yours? I got a set of Syns and Hardwood, the hardwood I know will take the recoil... but how does the new Syns hold up?

Sound pretty good!  It's tough shooting a pistol out to any sort of range past 30 yards or so.  It takes lots of practice, I hope you're a handloader!  A lot of guys get frustrated because it is a challenging sport (handgun hunting) and requires a lot of practice, and ammo aint' cheap!

One reason that I choose the Contender over the Encore for a handgun setup is that the Contender is a good bit lighter.  I'm not knocking the Encore, mind you, it's just that I prefer the Contender as a pistol.  I know that the Contender can't handle the big honkin' rifle cartridges, but the 30-30 (for example) will shoot much further than I'm capable.  I'm pretty consistent with mine - off hand - out to about 50 yards.  Past that I prefer a good steady rest.

Anyway, good luck with the Encore!  When you bag that first deer with it, you'll be ruined for life!

Jon,
I've got the factory walnut grip and forearm on mine... I'm sure the rubber grips would take some of the sting away but I really like the looks of the blue/walnut combo.

Anyone use fiber sights on a 30-06/308 pistol? Do they hold up well? shoot any better?
