Making do with what I have
« on: August 11, 2009, 09:26:29 AM »
Question regarding magnum primers. I'm loading for 300wm, 180 Partitions and also have some 200 Partitions I would like to try. I have been able to find winchester large rifle primers, and R19 powder. I'm finding most recipes are calling for mag primers no matter the powder choice. I'd be glad to use those mags if they were available but, no joy.

Am I just going to waste bullets if I use the reg primers or is this one of those try it and see things. If I do try it should the powder charge stay about the same?  I would like to use these loads this fall on Elk in Co.

;) Usually, the charge is reduced when trying a mag. primer over a std. load. as the mag. is hotter. Mags. are usually suggested when trying to ingnite large doses of slow burning powder, (which you may already know.) Some of the Winchester large  primers I have say either mag. or std. loads. You might check yours. When loading magnum rifle ammo, I have always used mag. primers, and have often found I get the best accuracy with mag. primers and slow powders in 06 size cases also. ;) Primers in our area are increasingly more plentyful. Perhaps a few wks. will bring them to your area also. :-\ ;) The one thing I would consider and I am only guessing is std. primers might not do as well in cold weather and slow powders as they do in summer temps. :-\ Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.  ;)

As far as powder is concerned how cold is cold. I used to think 15 - 20 deg was cold, till I came to Mn. now 5 deg and under seem cold and 20 is a fairly nice temp to look forward to. So, other than waiting till I pull the trigger and get a Pfft is there a way of finding out?

Did I mention I'm a rooky at this?

I would load some and test them. I think the Winchester primers will work just fine.

Load it and put it in the freezer, use a cooler to put it in to go to the range.  A small chunk of dry ice will keep it cold in the cooler.  Just be careful with the dry ice, keep it wrapped in newspaper or you will freeze your fingers.  That should let you test it for cold weather.  DP
