Results of new Parrott in action
« on: May 24, 2009, 01:13:21 AM »
This is a hardwood box that potato seed is stored and shipped in.  The golf ball just barely hit the nail. When I pried the ball out of the 2x4 the nail came with it.

I think it's quite possible that you just voided the warranty on that ball.

Spuddy,    Those are great pics of your new cannon going off, but we will take a hole in a piece of paper or a potato box any day!  Projectile firing keeps our interest, and we are glad you have found a good use for golf balls.  When you graduate to heavier missles of destruction, you will really understand what cannons are all about.

I warned him about doing that!  I also hid behind my GMC Suburban.  It went like this:     Blam!!!!  .....Ping!   ......Twang-Yeeoow!!!!
Hiding was a very prudent thing to do.   :o  :o

We are going to try real hard to get up your way, Spuddy, within the next two years and we might have to leave a few ITEMS at your house when we go across the border for a Canadian Cannon and Fortress Tour.

Mike & Tracey, I'm guesstimating that the golf ball hit the plate and returned to sender. Or a close approximation thereof. Ouch. Frank

we are glad you have found a good use for golf balls.
I recently heard of a game that can be played with these projos where you actually swat at them with a type of bat for some unknown reason. There is no black powder or earplugs involved so I can't imagine why anybody would even try it. Probably conceived by some kids in funny shorts listening to those rock and roll 8 track tapes.
Cannon projectile swatting.
Tomorrow it'll probably be the new EXTREME sport.

Frank,    That's exactly what happened.  Gary, (Rocklock I), took cover behind his Dominic-made Confederate Parrott which is plenty solid and Mike went off to the side to take a pic from 60 yards and I hid behind about 8,000 lbs. of Suburban, that's right 8,000 lbs.  We always have enough barbell weights onboard to outfit a good sized gym ( for taming the recoil of our creations), and always a pile of steel plates and steel chunks or rounds onboard, either coming from the steel distributor or going to the welder.  That golf ball went sizzling out ahead of 600 grs. of BP and beat a snappy retreat after it smacked that 1/2" thk. RR tie-plate.  It missed Gary by a least a foot and rebounded forward again off the Suburban's rear tire and missed Gary a second time by at least six inches and then skipped out to about 80 yards on this final ricochet.

we are glad you have found a good use for golf balls.

Careful now, Soot, or you'll have Carronader after you, because it was his countrymen who originated the game of Flogball and they are very proud of the fact that they achieved their goal of developing the single most frustrating of ALL human activities!!  (At least for some of us)   ;) ;)

In Honor of the Golf Ball.............Pardon my poor verse.... Kipling I'm not..... ::)

More Bounce to the once

Not one! not two! But six ounce’s were charged….
Beneath the noble ball………
The vent was primed and the gun was laid
It’s target a hunk of steel  be played…..
They fired her off  and it’s course  was true
Not with a thonk, not with a twang, but with a
mighty  Ping did it sing!

The noble ball sent on it's way now rebounds
To it's owner in flight!
He hears it come and ducks his head!
For surely if hit he would be dead!
Our noble ball has passed him by
Only to rebound for another try!
Once more it came once more it went
Past its owner’s  great big head…….
So now we see the error that comes
From firing the noble ball at steel ….
For there is more bounce to the ounce
You see, when packed upon so much
Powder with glee………..

The nail was just a bonus.  I used 450 grains at about 150 feet.  I was quite suprised at how far the ball went into the wood.  It would be interesting to know how many fps one could expect.

Correction:

The nail was the point of aim..   OK, the golf ball hit about 5/8" to the left at 150 yards (was that feet?)...

No brag, just fact!    ;D

Mike & Tracey sounds like you should have invested in a flak vest and steel pot. To be missed by the first rebound was coincentdal and then missed by the second providencial. Hey I made a funny. When I was a kid many many moons ago we found a few golf balls and went to PS 95 (I lived on the same block) and swatted a few with a baseball bat. Didn't take long
to have one zing right back. Sometimes I wonder how we ever survived childhood with some of the stupid things we did. Richard should know P.S. 95 between hillside ave and 90th ave in jamaica queens. Frank

Think sabots and steel balls,

Tracy and Mike

Steel balls might bounce back from a hard surface too.

Anyone whose been hit in the forehead by a BB rebounding from a hubcap on an old lady's 57 Chevy can tell you that ::)

Spuddy,   We sure would love to run some tests to see what the actual velocity measured in feet per second is with various charges, but Mike is worried that we will have a few balls go out "flat", (no spin) and therefore have all kinds of wild oscillation which could endanger his Chronograph.  If we ever get time, we'll build a heavy steel deflector with angle iron legs to shield the sensors.  Pretty good penetration for 150 feet!

Frank,    I get a kink in my neck every time I think about wearing the old steel pot!  Coincidental and providential, you bet!!  I will suggest that he get a flak jacket to protect his rear the next time.  A while back, did you say there was a big gun at P.S. 95 or nearby?

Think sabots and steel balls,
Tracy and Mike

Anyone whose been hit in the forehead by a BB rebounding from a hubcap on an old lady's 57 Chevy can tell you that ::)

Victor,   Steel balls and sabots should be used only upon targets which can be penetrated, not steel plates, rocks, large, tough trees, etc.  Bounce back from unyielding objects can be very dangerous.  My youthful inexperience led me to:  1)  Fire my large slingshot with 1/4" steel balls at my grandfather's 3 foot diameter cherry tree from 20 feet.  I was so stupid back then I had to be whacked twice by bounced back balls before I stopped!!  As for that cherry tree, I wasn't done yet.

2)  I didn't fare any better when I whipped out my single-six pellet gun.  Aiming very carefully at the clothesline wrapped around that monster tree-truck, I let fly.  Striking just a hair above the line, that 22 cal pellet rebounded nicely and got me right between the eyes!!  Boy that stung......enough of cherry trees.

Cannons,  finally,  3)  The boredom of junior high school was relieved quite a bit when my friends and I discovered shooting.  Not too subtle on that seque from "cannons" to projectile bounce back.  Finally, the third example of projectile rebound which didn't kill me, but could have, was my first and last experience using the wrong size ammunition in a revolver.   A friend came up with a small, borrowed, revolver.  Marked 32 S&W Long, we bought a box of ammo at the local sporting goods shop.  Try to do that today at 13 years old!  Unfortunately for us, we believed the clerk when he said, “Don’t worry, these 32 Colt cartridges will fit your gun.”  Yea, right!  Well, actually they did fit the chambers, but it was a loosey-goosey, RATTLE FIT.

Remember, we were young and very ignorant, so out to the field we go.  Being mid-January, we chopped out a big piece of our favorite target, snow crust, and put it against the trunk of a huge old oak tree.  Shooting from about 25 feet, we smashed several of our frozen targets.  When it was my turn, I took careful aim and Blam…..Twang…..Yeeoow!!  The rebound of that bullet smacked me right on the shin and really smarted.  We went up to investigate.  Not one round had penetrated that tough oak tree!  A combination of youthful ignorance, bulged and split brass releasing pressure, before bullet movement, and a very solid oak tree with frozen sap in the cambium layer led to this near-serious accident.  I was lucky as I limped home and I remembered not to limp as I went through the kitchen where my mother was sifting flour.

Regards,

Tracy and Mike

Mike & Tracey, Back when I was in the navy, the only time we ever had to wear the old pots was during general quarters and operational readiness inspections. 160 degrees on the upper level of the pump room and that pot got hot and quick. There used to be two large civil war cannons in the front of p.S. 35 in queens village. I tried to do a google search a few weeks ago but no cigar. They were mounted on concrete pedastals one on each side of the main entrance to the school.
Think one of the cross streets was 90th avenue. Maybe one of our new york based members would take a slight road trip to check and see if they are still there and snap a few pics. I'd like to see if they are still there. Sure would need a huge crane and flatbed to have hauled them away. Frank

Dom,
I did use your sights.  I also tried without them.  They make me more consistant than without.  I had some young kids around and didn't want to shoot alot of projectiles with them around until I get used to how everything works.  I have made up a bunch of charges and am planning on a session to get used to setting the sights.  I will call you next week to thank you for the great job you did on my cannon.  I am very pleased and wanted to tell you in person.  I have not been home much the last two weeks but will be for a little while.  Thanks again for a great gun.
Regards,
Tim
