308 Handi on the Hunt!!
« on: August 09, 2009, 08:14:56 AM »
Took the 308 handi elkhunting on the Mogoollon rim strting this weekend.  One shot and a lady elk on Fri.  Went back out this morning varmint hunting two shots, two coyotes, I guess I don't need all that ammo I was worried about.  Best part is I gave my brother in law something to brag about in town.  I am keeping 40lbs ground fine for sausage and he is having the rest turned into jerky sticks to hand out at his business here in town.  He missed his elk hunt here in Az being treated for prostate cancer when he was drawn.  All in all a real good weekend.

Nice job with the Handi and Elk hunting.

I shot lots of Elk on the Rim over the past 40 years. At the time I also used a single shot. My single of choice at that time was a Ruger #3 carbine in .375 Winchester, this was later custom re-barreled for the 30-40 Krag. The 30-40 really comes alive in a single shot. My custom reloaded rounds were equal to or better than the .308 Winchester.

I have a Handi in .308 it is my very favorite rifle.

Blindhari, Nice job on the elk. Hope things work out for your bro in law.
I bought a 308 Ultra a year ago and just got around to scoping it and taking her to the range. Two boxes of shells and I would not think twice about taking it out this fall for a deer. -g

Brother in law is a little incorrect.  Man is and has been really good and generous friend.  Although I generally prefer to hunt at Safeway, he loves to hunt.  I don't count the cost, he wants to hunt, I buy a rifle and put in for a tag.  Better than an elk is having a chance to spend a few sunsets and sunrises with a man I like who lives for the outdoors.

That's life, it's not the destination but the trip that counts.  Hope he beats this thing and you get to share many more hunting trips.  DP
