Convert Wingmaster 870 safet to left handed operation??
« on: July 22, 2009, 05:42:26 AM »
Hi,

Is it easy to convert an 870 Wingmaster safety for left handed operation?
Has anybody written a procedure for this?  Link?

Thanks, Tom

Trust me...it's not easy.  It's possible...not easy.  Your best bet is to order a new trigger plate assembly from Remington.  They offer one for a RH shotgun with a LH safety.  Just swap it out and you're good to go.

I'm right handed ( some of my best friends are lefty's and a daughter ) so forgive me if this a stupid statement. Would you possibly be setting up a dangerous situation for people who have spent a lifetime pushing the button one way to safe a gun and the other to fire? Flame away I'm just askin.

As a left handed shooter I can tell you that you really don't want an 870.  You can switch the safety, I've had it done.  But the ejection is still right in your face.  You will end up with gas and crap in your eyes.  That's why I cut way back on the 870 use.  The BPS is your best choice, but the old Model 12s have good tight actions and I've never had much trouble with the escaping gas or crud getting in my eyes.  The safety can be switched on them in about 10 minutes for about $10.00.

I agree with what shootall said. Go for the lefty 870. I have one and the reason I got it is because of the safety being backwards on my dad's right handed 870. And yes I am saying that you righties are the ones that shoot backwards ;D. And I'm also gonna agree with Empty Quiver because if you switch the safety around and someone else uses the gun and is used to the safety working the other way, their could be problems.

I have never felt the right hand safety was a problem or a lefty. My 870 has never had any gas escape. My only problem as a lefty has been that if I accidently cant the gun a bit toward the right when firing the next round will go out the ejection port instead of in the chamber. That has cost me on follow up shots several times.
