Imagine a 38 Special case with a 223 Rem shoulder and neck.

It would be a rimmed cartridge and also a bottleneck cartridge.

Where does one headspace off, the rim or the shoulder?

Inquiring minds want to know.

It doesn't matter, just pick one, the rim is easiest and the sholder is best for brass life.  If you are going to use it in a bolt gun the sholder will be easier because you leave some of the case sticking out the breach and not have to cut an extractor slot, if you use it in the Handi rifle or contender then I would say the rim because you have to cut the extractor/ejector slot anyway.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

Hmmm,

Lets see,

1) .379 reamer to do the body,
2) 3/8 82 degree long shank countersink for the shoulder
3) .257 reamer for the neck, (Remember Brass thickens when shrunk)
4) #3 taper pin reamer for the leade
5) 1/4" carbide BB R.005 for the rim (optional)
6) Mori Seiki Sl-25 to do the work.

Am I missing anything??

O, yea, The rim...  Definitely the rim.

Larry and Paul, many thanks.

Unfortunately it is all academic now, since I cancelled the project.

Cheers.
