Last minute boar
« on: July 26, 2009, 02:38:20 PM »
went to a new place down near stonehenge this weekend just gone - always good to check out some new country!!!
the owner said he'd been seeing lots of pigs around lately, but things didn't turn out that way for me while i was there - but i guess that's pigs for you. either way - it is a very promising property for pigs, and i bet i'll be getting a fair few off there in the future as i get to know the place.
here's a few pics:

a very old steel boat near the thompson river:

The owner was kind enough to lend me a bike while i was there, since i wasn't able to get mine there due to some trailor issues. on the last morning i had only headed about 400 yards from camp when i spotted this fella heading off through the lignum. a quick chase on the bike and a 150gr hornady interlock changed his plans. i was using my trusty S/S ruger hawkeye 308. he was in his prime and in good condition - a fairly solid boar:

next time i'll be taking my own bike out - here she is, a suzuki DR-Z 250:

Bravo on you, bsrecurve!! Nice boar. Like your hunting rig too, especially using the dirt bike to get you where you want to go.

Nice gear, congratulations on the boar.

Never know when the river will come up in wet country.

Gidday Brian , good to see you had a succesfull hunt mate . Salt of the earth those country folks - real good of the Cocky to loan out a bike , nothing to expensive with the trailer is it mate .The country looks pretty dry and it doesn't look like there's much feed or herbage , how's the Thompson flowing ? Caught any Yabbies or Yellowbelly of late ?

regards Jacko

yes - the cockies here are generlly top blokes, and "salt of the earth" is a good way of describing them. haven't done any fishing since i got back, but may head out this weekend. it is drying up out here mate, but there's still plenty of greenage in the thicker parts of the channels, just not out in the open like where i shot the pig.
the trailer is currently undergoing some modifications to try and get it to have less drag, as fuel consumption is pretty bad with it the way it is. i got stuck into it with the angle grinder yesterday and i'm basically removing all steel sheeting front and back (and the windshield - which was the main cause of the problem). this'll be replaced with some heavy guage steel mesh that the air can flow through.
she looks a bit different now, comared to the pic above.

Jacko,

I took him up on the Lynd River Cape York about 4-5 years ago.  Nope,he wasn't in the hills,he ran onto a rocky outcrop after I spooked from his bed.   A Remmy 7600 308 ended his run for keeps.

gday and welcome  steve - i've enjoyed your writings on AHN many times.

it is fairly dry again these days - although we had a good summer season with good rains and flooding, so it has taken longer than it would have otherwise to dry up. the pig hunting should begetting better and better from now through next year IMO.

it's been a while since i got out after the hogs, but will have the next 2 weeks of school holidays to enjoy the bush. will be going down around stone henge, and maybe also spend some time up towards muttaburra on the thompson. i have access to some great properties in those areas.
i have been told that i'll find some very big old billies down south on one place (which haven't been shot at very much) and will definately have to check that out as well.
