45 Auto Rim in a 45 Long Colt ?

Can you fire the 45 Auto Rim in a 45 Long Colt? Thanks

Seems to me you can. My Dad has a revolver from the turn of the century in .45 LC. It has some half moon clips that hold the rimless .45 ACP round in the cylinder.

The .45 Auto Rim (and ACP) requires a spare cylinder fitted to your single action chambered specifically for the ACP/AR.  The AR cartridge has a rim that is too thick to be used in a .45 Colt chamber.

it wont work in a 45colt or 45acp single action cylinder. In a single action you need a cylinder cut just for the auto rim. Ive allways wanted a custom 3 screw small frame in 45 autorim.

If you get an extra cylinder in 45acp and have the rear of it turned off a little to match the extra thickness of the Auto Rim case you can still shoot normal acp rounds in it, as they headspace on the case mouth, not the rim.

Then you would have a 45 SA with two cylinders that would handle FOUR great 45 cal rounds.  the 45 colt and the Cowboy 45 Special in one cylinder, and the 45 acp and 45 Auto Rim in the other.

I'm still thinking serously about getting extra acp cylinders for both my Colts and having them marked 45acp/C45S and using the 45 Cowboy Special in them.  No real reason, I just like the idea, LOL.

This is just a personal issue, but in my single actions, I only shoot .45 Colt cartridges - best for nostalgia.

In the S&W 25's and 625's, I shoot .45AR and very few .45ACP. I shoot the Smith's only double action - best of both worlds. I see no real advantage in the .45ACP or AR in the single action.

I use a lot of the Cowboy 45 Specials in my 45 Colts, simply because I shoot mostly Cowboy Action Shooting in a Black Powder Cartridge catagory, and they save me a lot of money over the year by using much less powder per shot.

I just never could get happy using fillers in a BP round, and don't need full house 45 colt rounds to hit a steel target a few feet away. I can miss with the C54S round just as easily, for less money, LOL!!!!!

I would guess that's primarly the reason most folks use a shorter cartridge in guns where they are available, for reduced recoil and wear on the guns if shot a lot, and for  economy of reloading and shooting.  Like 38/357, 44 sp/44 mag, C45S/45colt, the examples are many, and all for valid reasons.

Aprox 26 grns of FFFG APP in a C45S versis aprox 34 grns FFFG APP in a 45 colt, over maybe 5,000 to 10,ooo rds a year makes a big diference in the cost of powder.

Sadly the answer is no.
When I got my schofield I was excited that the 1/2 moon clips with 45ACP loaded in them fit.  (also the M-25 speed loader works)
I then tried to close the action and they are a fraction too long to work.  The Auto rim was made to give the same rim thickness as the ACP in a 1/2 or full moon clip.
You can have a gun smith shave the back of your cylinder to work.

For those of us not into the Holy Black, the .45 Cowboy Special and .45 AR cases work well with smokeless powder by reducing excessive airspace in the cartridge case with the small loads of fast powder in light cowboy loads. I have .45 ACP cylinders for my .45 Colt NMBHs which have been modified for .45 AR.

Recent article in one of the gun rags about just such a deal.  Had a revolver (Ruger I think... but not sure) that had a .45 ACP/Auto Rim cylinder.  I believe this was on a .45 Colt gun.  3 chamberings with 2 cylinders.  Even named the smith that did the work.  Can't remember who it was but it was as famous smith.

The article you are refering to is in the July Guns and Ammo, on page 30.   By Patrick Sweeney. Had Bowen fit the extra cylinder in 45acp, turned down on the rear to use the 45 auto-rim but still headspacing on the  case mouth to use the 45 acp in that cyl.  Gives him a revolver that is capable of shooting the 45 colt, 45 Schofield, and 45 Cowboy Special in one cylinder, and 45 acp, 45 auto-rim, and 45 Cowboy Special with a taper crimp in the other cylinder.

Quite a varity of loads available in 5 diferent cases that all fit one revolver.  And Sweeney didn't even mention the 45 CS being usable in both cylindeers.

He got better than he thought.
