All current production H&R centerfire rifle barrels are 4140 alloy.

Tim, that is a good point to bring up. I've seen posts on converting rimfire barrels to centerfire rounds, and I think they will work fine, but I suspect that NEF / Remington may use a milder steel for the rimfire barrels like Ruger does, and they may not last as long.

Rimfire and shotgun barrels are 1137,  no one has shot a converted rimfire barrel enough to wear one out or reported deeper throats yet, FWIW.  ;) It's possible that some of the early 17hmr barrels were 4140 before Marlin started making barrels, but those made by Marlin are 1137.
