New member and new Handi owner
« on: August 15, 2009, 08:23:56 AM »
Hello all!... I'm a new member to the board , name is Bob from N.W. Ontario , Canada... I'm also a new Handi-rifle owner as well , I went all the way and bought a 500 S&W... Haven't shot it yet , I'm still waiting for the reloading dies to show up.... I am sure impressed with what you get for the price of these rfles , a friend who also bought a 500 got me interested in the big 50.... Also as a side note , another local fellow used his 500 S&W for moose hunting last fall , he used the factory Hornady  350 gr load.... He called in a very nice bull moose , about 900 lbs , to about 40 yds.. One shot over top of the front leg broadside and the bull just stood and shook for 5 seconds then dropped on the spot... He's one happy hunter and Handi-rifle owner...

At the moment I'm looking more towards shooting cast bullets in mine , thinking about picking up the RCBS 400 gr PBFP mold.... I've enjoyed reading about reloading for the 500 on the forum here , first I think I'll try the 400 gr cast bullet at 1200 to 1400 first and see how it performs , still looking at what powders to use..

Anyways , all the best and keep the good reports coming in , this forum is a great one to participate in I'm finding for all us gunnuts....

Best regards , Bob

Hi Bob, glad to have you here with us. I got a .500 and it is now left at my buddies in Maine with the stipulation the he use it. He has a Moose permit for the last week in September and I am sure he will get a moose. This is the place to be for all things Handi. Remember, when you are here you are among friends....<><....:)

Welcome to GBO :) Be sure to read the FAQ much good information there. If you do not have to do any thing to your Handi all the better, but it is still a good read. ;) Good Luck and Good Shooting

Wecome.  I don't have a Handi .500 yet, but it can't be too far down the road.  You're in good company, stick around, you'll love it.  I'm on Da Upper Peninsula of Michigan, so I can't be too far from ya.  Good luck and good shooting.  Get a moose for me.

Welcome aboard Bob. I have a friend that has a .500 too. So far he has used his 45-70 for a couple of black bears, a moose, and a few deer, but he is looking forward to taking something with the .500. I'm sure you will have a great time with yours!

Thanks very much to everyone for the warm and gracious welcome!.. Thats what makes this particular forum great , the calibre of the members!  ;)

I also have some ties to the States by the way , my only son is an E5 Aviation Structural mechanic on the USS Nimitz , VAQ-135 Squadron. He is on his thid tour of duty headed to the Gulf now.... He has done well in th Navy , he even has received a leter of citation from Rear Admiral J.T. Blake for returning an aircraft to service that had a stubborn problem keeping it sidelined while in the Gulf on his first tour...I taught him how to shoot when he was a little fellow , and it paid off as he qualified as Expert on his firearm testing , (only 3 out of his class of 79 recruits did)...  He's also married to a fine young lady from AZ.

Yes , as you can tell I am a little bit proud of him....

Glad to be aboard now on GBO's!

All the best fellas!

Bob

Got up a little early didn't ya :o I am proud of your son too - of course, not as much as you as you have every right to be. I am proud of all our military people.
