sabot for .454 bullet
« on: August 17, 2009, 04:37:54 PM »
I was cleaning out my basement and found 500  255gr  .454  lead bullets for a 45 colt.   I was wanting to use these with a sabot , cuz a box of 500 sabots is cheaper than 500 powerbelts.  A lot of sabots say they're for 45cal bullets, some even specify .451 or .452.  would I be in any danger in assuming 3 thousands difference in lead and plastic will blow my face off?   I can't find any info  with the sabot manufactures.  They all seem to be made to shoot high end fancy copper jacketed hollow points, not semi wad cutters.

thanks guys

There are several .50/.452 sabots that would work just fine. You will just have to figure out which ones will work the best. There are guys shooting .458" bullets in the black .50/.452" Harvester Crush Rib sabots, so your .454" bullets should work ok in those. There are also several EZ-Load sabots out there now as well that are a few thousandths thinner in the petals that should work.

What rifle are you shooting them out of? The bore diameter will also play a part in which sabot to use. I would say you should be safe with the Black Harvester Crush Rib sabots with most rifles.

Well, you're not goint to blow your face off so long as you get the bullet seated on the powder charge.  You will likely be able to load them fine with Harvester crush rib sabots.

thanks guys, I figured it ok, but I just wanted a second opinion before I put my face to the stock.  Its a traditions pursuit, break action.  Older one nothing fancy.

thanks again I'll try the harvester crush ribs and let ya know
