By way of introduction...
« on: August 21, 2009, 09:05:14 AM »
Good Afternoon, J. J. Magnum here.

I thought I would drop by and post a couple of pics of my two "Survivors".  I thought you might like to see the completion of my "sighting" project for the NEF's.  I bought the original 308 model when I still lived in South Carolina as a back-up to my Ruger bolt-action deer rifle.  It of course came with just the scope rail and no other sights.  This was fine with me at the time but I wanted something more in keeping with the "survivor" idea; what would happen if the scope failed?  So I cast around and found the XS (Ashley) ghost ring sight.  That left putting a front sight on the 308.  A couple of years went by and I relegated the project to the back burner so to speak.

Then last January I found a great buy on the 45/410 at my local Gander Mtn.  It came with NO sights (just a bead).  I knew that wouldn't do, especially since I didn't get as much accuracy from the 45 LC at 50 yds. as I had hoped (my S&W 25 was better).

About this time I met a new friend who was a retired gunsmith looking for some small projects, so I dropped the whole kit and caboodle in his lap.  This was the result:

(the blued one is in 308 and the nickle one in 45).

Here is a close up of the Ashley Ghost Ring sight on the 45.

This is a view through the ghost ring to the front sight.  A very quick acquisition indeed.

Both weapons will now take either scopes or irons.  The next two projects with these rifles is to acquire a second Ashley Ghost Ring (for the 308) and a Red Dot for the 45...  ;)

Welcome aboard JJ! Nice work on the sights, I've been thinking about altering one of the Eabco peep rails to work on H&Rs, but after seeing yours, I think the flat spot on a Weaver #82 would work fine too with the right sight, I just happen to have a WGRS with a milled base that may fit fine, the Marbles might work on it too.

Thanks for sharing, be sure to spend some time in the FAQs and Help sticky, lots of good info there for Handholics.  ;)

Nice job with those babies ;)  They both look good.  I wish I could use iron sights again.  Welcome, and good luck with both.

Pete have you tried the ghost rings or peeps, they have renewed my love of iron sights!

I have a T/C .32 Cherokee with their Hunter Peep sight.  I removed the aperature and use it as a ghost ring.  It works fairly well for me, but not as well as a red dot.  I just refuse to put a new fangled contraption on a traditional side hammer.  That little rifle has been a tack driver for many years now.
