removing barrel band from fore end of 336 W
« on: July 09, 2009, 01:47:10 AM »
When I tried, the screw holding the band just kept turning round and round, and round and round, and round and round.

I tried removing the sling swivel screw, but that too kept turning and turning.

Has anyone else has this problem? How did you resolve it?

Why would Marlin design it this way? What ever happened to easy maintanance on an old work horse?

The spinning barrel band screw is most likely free of it's threads in the side of the barrel band opposite the screw head, and is being held in the hole due to a tight fit through the forend.

I would apply some pressure to the forend screw tip, opposite the screw head, with a small drift pin or small nail tip ground flat - to press it out far enough to grasp.

The swivel screw's nut, inside, is most likely spinning free because there's nothing, like a wrench, to keep it from doing so.

I agree with what Rangr said.  They are sometimes a tight fit, give it a little help.

Thanks for your replies.

If I do manage to get it out, will I be able to get it back in? And will the sling swivel interfere?

[If I do manage to get it out, will I be able to get it back in?] -

That's a question, men've been asking, for thousands of years.  ;)   ;D   ;D

[And will the sling swivel interfere?] -

Nope. Re-tighten it's nut though, B 4 you put everything back together.

After the rifle is assembled at the factory, the fore-end wood dries for years, and shrinks, and is very tight against the front band screw.

Tap the screw out with a brass (not steel) drift pin.  And yea, you have to hit it hard.

After you get it out, find a drill bit that fits the hole in the stock EXACTLY, and then go up to the next sized bit that is 1/64th of an inch larger.  Use this up-sized bit to drill out the hole in the stock, to enlarge it.  After this, you should not have alot of problems re-installing the stock and barrel band, and the stock and band will still be very tight.

If you still have problems reinstalling, then go up in size again to a larger drill bit (1/32nd of an inch larger than the original exact bit), and redrill again.  This should do it.

Thank you all for your replies.

Mannyrock,

Wow, that sounds like a lot of work. I thought Marlin was supposed to be easy to take apart!
