Bowling Ball Mortar Building
« on: August 22, 2009, 06:26:52 AM »
Hi, Can anyone steer me to plans for a O2 tank BBM? I have ready access to used Gas cylinders and it sounds like fun.  Thanks, Pete

Hi Pete,

Welcome to the forum!

There are no plans as such for BB mortars you need to go through the threads, there are some good ones on chamber size
and construction, the BB mortars you will see here tend to conform to an earlier style we do not discuss designs that replicate
modern mortars here at this site, 1898 and before designs.  Check the stickies on design and safety there is a lot of good info
there.

Thanks Allen, mea culpa.  What I had in mind was a design with a skirt that would look like a Seacoast mortar but be easier to fabricate for the machinist challenged. Regards, Pete

Look through the forum for threads with "entsminger;"  he wanted to make a Dictator without resorting to the 17000 lbs of cast iron.  Also check out the recent threads about making the Paixhans Monster Mortar.  That was built with a cosmetic shroud covering the actual firing parts.

If you scale the 13" mortar to 8.625" (bowling ball diameter), it shouldn't be too excessively large or heavy as long as you don't want to fire cast iron (or zinc) shot.

You can get full scale period plans for the 13" seacoast mortar (No. 41) from Antique Ordnance Publishers.

Welcome to the Forum! There is an old posting, from 2004, look back in the early pages, that is titled "Florida Bowling Ball Mortar" It is about building a BBM from an O2 tank. Good reference material, with pics and drawings. Just remember the powder chamber has to be thick enough in the walls, including the base, to withstand the charge. BoomLover
