EXPERTS - I'm frustrated, trying to identify - - -
« on: October 01, 2003, 06:41:07 AM »
Over the last few years, I have inherited some guns from my deceased Dad and Stepdad, neither of which I was very close to for one reason or another. They had guns but didn't like to talk about them.  Bought a 23rd Edition Blue Book of Gun Values which hasn't helped much.  I did check the 'Store Brand Cross over list, too.

I am primarily interested in Date Mfr , in some cases original MFr & Mod, I know prices would vary based on condition.

Of the several , I am trying to get info on are two Lever guns.

Winchester Model 88-CAL-.308 WIN   S/N  ? Can't find one.

Winchester Ranger 30-30 WIN  S/N 53617XX

Non Lever guns

J.C. HIGGINS Model 50  30-06  Action made in Belgium  Didn't see any S/n
Note: This one has some frustratingly ill memories. My first deer tagged , with my deer tag, was shot with this one in 1953/54?.  My Stepdad was impatient  with my shooting delay and having just killed his, shot mine , too. I didn't even get a chance . Stepdad was using the 30-06, I had an old, old 30-30. My FIRST HUNT!  I wasn't too happy about his actions.

Sears Mod 35  22 Pump  S/N583335XX  (I fouind a 35A Orignal Stevens Orign Mod 66A, but no Mod 35)

Westernfield SB808A   22LR -22HS Shorts.     Came close, but NO 808A
Didn't see any S/N

That JC Higgins Model 50 was made by FN (Fabrique Nationale Herstal) Belgium. (there are some "hits" if you care to check them out on Google under <JC Higgins Model 50 Bolt-action>).
The FN  Supreme Mauser Bolt-action Rifle made between 1957-75: Calibers: 243, 270, 7mm, 308, 30-06 in 4-shot magazine  22-inch bbl. in 308; 24-inch in other calibers. Worth about $575.

I'll have to look on mine to see where the serial number is.  Try this link to find manufacturing date: http://oldguns.net/cgi-bin/f2f/f2f.pl?http://oldguns.net/sn_php/winmods.htm

savageT..............
My parental caregiving responsibilites sometimes get the best of me. My mail, sometimes gets put aside for LATER reading.  Plus my two grandsons were here for a few days and I was encouraging their interest in guns.

What's the point?  Well, I was gathering my Guns Magazines together to catch up on some reading. Lo and Behold, the July Issue of Guns had an article on Page 32,  'Rifleman by Dave Anderson'    'Winchester's Sleek Model 88'     Alot of good info.

Still think my grandsons got away with two of the issues, that I can't find. Maybe still around here somewhere.  Things do get a bit hectic at times taking care of my 87 yr old Mom with Alzheimers .Depression etc etc.
The two mags, one had an article of checking out a revolver, the other had an article checking out a semiauto.

Strange that you couldn't find the serial number on the Mod. 88.  On mine it is on the left side of the receiver, just behind the chamber out in plain sight.

  Don't know how I and a couple of others missed the Ser No. It is partially obscured by a side mounting scope bracket.  Only 3 visible 171 - - -. Of the three screws mounting the bracket, one of them has half the screw head missing. Will have to remove the barrel and get that screw out and replaced and get the complete SN.

Thanks

Maybe I should put it another way.......... LEAVE IT ALONE

The side scope mount /screws are inset/forced down a little into the stock.  Only way I see to replace screw and get complete ser no is loosen screw holding barrel, lift it up enough to work on the broken screw. OR TAKE IT TO A GUNSMITH. .

Will probably leave as is and the hell with the sn.
