travel gun
« on: August 25, 2009, 07:04:55 AM »
Many of us travel , many in a personal vehicle . We cross state lines alot of the time . We wish to go protected but laws make it hard in some places . With that in mind i came up with a workable gun for most cases , I THINK . a 20 ga or 12 ga pump or self loaded shotgun . Easy to take down where required by law , easy to justify as easy as saying you will shoot a round of clays . Easy to have a short bbl along , a mag ext. along . easy to carry in a bag if broken down to get into your room if you stop for rest . Easy to pick up ammo for in most places . Not a great cost .
No not a hand gun on the seat but better than nothing if say you get caught in a 9-11 deal or a storm etc where your travel is delayed and you are stuck for a few days .
I travel to Canada to hunt ,i carry 2 shotguns and cross 1/2 the USA to get there alot of it not gun friendly . The shotgun seems to cause less concern .
Any other options ? keep it legal .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Many years ago I was a long haul trucker and a lot of us carried rifles as at that time the laws were relaxed enough that a rifle could be carried almost anywhere. I have hauled around an old SKS or sometimes a lever action 30-30. But being a haul haul trucker maybe the laws are a little different from driving a personal vehicle in that the truck is really a rolling home away from home that the driver sleeps in also, so that may be the difference.

Your shotgun idea sounds like a winner and may be a way to go!

I think what you said last is most important. Keep it legal in the states your traveling in.  If able to go CCW great do so.  If unloaded and cased is the legal way then fine.  Handgun or longgun no matter really, if one of each great!  Some states have funny laws right around hunting season too. Best to know the law where yea going.  Also keeping the arm secure in the vehicle is important, yea don't want to loose it to a smash and grab kinda situation.

a short bbl shotgun taken down fits in a suitcase if the need came up . I guess what got me thinking was the first trip to Canada to hunt was a few  days after 9/11 . We had crossed into Canada only a few hours when the Border closed . Made ya think even though we were fine on our return . I had 2 shotguns then and was glad , more so on the trip home . We also got tied up in the DC sniper deal on one trip had a road closed on us and had to go miles and hours out the way .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

In my Jeep Cherokee under the fold down rear set was a neat well.  I found an Old 520 stevens pump gun.  Cut it down a little too short.
actually a friend did it.  painted the gun with rustolium in flat black.  Since the 520 comes apart in half I took it apart and tossed both halves into the trough and never thought about it again till I had to have the car serviced and leave it somewhere.  Also I added about a dozen rounds of buck and some sluggs in a military shotgun pouch.
Well after a few years in a car with the cold air condensing under the seats, the air conditioner and friends and friends kids spilling drinks and what have you in the back seat.  My 520 needed to be redone as it was a rusty mess.
If I were to do it again I would stick it in a large plastic vacumme bag with a desicant pouch and some ammo and vacume seal it to live in the car.  The one day it was pulled out and loaded was the day the jury returned with the OJ Simpson verdict and I was in a Black area.
Gun was assemled loaded and in the passenger seat.  When I heard Not Guilty..1 I wanted to Riot! and 2 was happy I would not need my BB to get home.  Un loaded it, took it apart again and stuck it back under the seat for the next 4 years.  The car dealer was suprised when I went to get my stuff out of the Jeep I was tradeing in and out popped a shotgun and I asked where I can stick it in the new SUV.
The 3rd row fold down seat section worked well. for a while.  Till the girlfriend at the time had three kids and I was always in there flipping up the seat and trying not to let the kids see the scatter gun.
