New 45/70.I am so weak willed.
« on: July 20, 2009, 03:04:04 PM »
I was browsing Gunbroker a couple of days ago and came across a Handi 45/70.While looking at the posted pictures I noticed the serial number prefix was CBX and the side of the receiver said "Ilion,NY" and not "Gardner,Mass".With my curiosity peaked I contacted Tim who confirmed what I thought. It is a 2009 made piece by Remington.
I fought my self for a couple of days since I already have a 45/70 Handi plus A Marlin and a Siamese Mauser both in 45/70.In the end my weak willed self was skulking the auction Sunday morning and when it got to 17 minutes before closing I sniped the previous bid and bought the rifle. It is going to be interesting to be able to compare my 2007 manufacture extractor Gardner,Mass. one with the new one when I receive it.I sent off the FFL copy and money order this morning and after talking to the seller I may have possession by Friday.I'll post back here when I receive it.
Tim,thanks for your able assistance. You da man!

Congrats, that's great!! And thanks for the update on the 2009 serial number prefix, I've been waiting for someone to report the next in the new series.  ;)

Thursday 7/23 Update
I received the 45/70 today and this thing looks great.First off I notice the wood looks darker.
The serial number is CBAXXXXXX.
Comparing it to my 2007 manufacture(HX) 45/70 Handi I find the barrel just says "45-70 Govt" where the older one says "SB-2" and "45-70 Govt."
Both say Harrington&Richardson. The new one says "Manufactured in Ilion,NY." the older one says "Manufactured in Gardner,Mass".
Both are extractor and there appears to be no manufacturing change that I can see.
I did notice that the rear sights are identical but the new one is on backwards. This is a used gun so I cannot attribute that to any factory mistake.Although the seller stated it was a used gun it does not appear to have been fired that I can tell.
The rifling is identical in both.I have heard that some 45-70's have Ballard rifling and some have micro-groove.I've never seen one with micro-groove.
That is about all I have noticed.I expect it to shoot just as good as the old one.I kinda like having one manufactured by Remington.

UPDATE:
I was out in the shop getting the rear sight loose and turned around. There were no screw marks of any kind on the screws.I really believe it came from the factory that way.
I ran a gauze patch thru the bore and it came out with NOTHING on it.I really do not think it has been fired despite being preowned.
Range report as soon as I can get to the range.

I looked at a new one in a store yesterday that had the sight on backwards.  Another missing the front site.  No joke.  I had to point it out to the owner.  She said thay were great about service.

Here it is Wednesday August 12th. and I finally got to the range with the Ilion,NY manufactured 45/70.I have always found 45-70 Handi rifles to be accurate and this one is no exception.
It took a couple of adjustments to the elevation on the rear sight and then it was right on the money.I really like this one and I am not sure if it's my imagination but I think the trigger might be just a tad better on this one than the Gardner,Mass. manufactured one.
At any rate the move of manufacturing to NY hasn't hurt quality one darn bit.

That must be one "tuff" tennis ball!! ;D  I figured you wouldn't get but one bounce a "poof" out one shot on a tennis ball with a 45-70 and then it would be tennis ball dust!

Does the recoil pad look different?
