45-70 in North Dakota

  We took a weekend trip down to Fargo this weekend.  Had to check out the local gun shops.  Went to the Wholesale Sports in Fargo and couldn't believe what I found, a 45-70 Handi for $259, 45-70 BC for$299 and they had a 30-06 on sale for $199.  If I could have brought them back up north at least two of them would be in the locker right now.  Compared to the prices here I thought it was a good deal.

The BC price is at least 3yrs old, they must not sell many H&Rs there, the BC at the local Wholesale Sports(Sportsman's Warehouse) is $360, Handis are $240 for wood and $250 for syn. Before they were bought by the Canadian co-op and changed to WS, they had 30-06 Handis for the same $199, but those didn't last long, that was a few months ago.

  It's a bit of a crap shoot.  Today they didn't.  Just asked a couple of question and said have a nice day.  Next time who knows, everything may be hauled out on the ground.

I live in Fargo, That place doesnt seem to move alot of them, but they are pretty dang cheap there. I havent been there in awhile, but they didnt have much in stock since the merger/sale or whatever it was. Usually a pretty decent place to go.

Hope you enjoyed Fargo.

Went into one of my local shops and they had a 45/70 synthetic stocked iron sighted New Ejector modle for $219.00 ;)

  Kal52, what does a guy have to do to buy a rifle in N.D.  I called the gun registry here and I have to have the gun registered to me before I bring it across.  They said there may be some regulations on buying a gun down there but never told me what that might be.
  We did enjoy Fargo, I think I'll be back soon.  Another thing I liked was when I was at Scheels is the gun display, you can actually walk up and pick one up.  Not like that here.

basically to buy a rifle, you go pick one out, fill out some paperwork, they do the instant background check and you take it home. Alot faster if you have your concealed permit  ;D

Now, as far as getting it across the border right after you buy it? not too sure, I havent tried it. You may have to make a few more phone calls.

Not so fast guys:
 How are you going to legally buy that rifle from a Store in SD without a DL from that State? I presume they have a back ground check requirement.
If someone local buys it for you, they are in violation of Fed law and that could earn him/her time in the big house. Buying it at a gun show from a private individual would eliminate the back ground check but not all the other papercrap you need.
To get that rifle into Canada you need an import permit from Canada and they require an export permit from the US before you get that.

Read that as waiting time,  Paper work and $$

I don't know if Canada Customs permits you to register the firearm at one of their crossings with the Firearms Centre or not.
There is a Customs Broker available that does this sort of thing for you, again read paperwork and more $$ and they will only deal with a Store.

Pete: That 50 bucks charge is for US citizen to bring in a firearm on a temporary basis. It has nothing to do with a Canadian importing a firearm.
When you get done jumping through all of those hoops you will find it is cheaper to buy on your side of the Border.


As far as sneaking in a firearm,  the Canadian Border Agent isn't required to ask you speciffically about firearms because there are big signs on the Border  telling you All Firearms must be declared.

Thanks BBF, I looked at the 4473 concerning non-US Citizens,  it doesn't look cut and dried on our end either, there are hoops to jump thru BEFORE it's processed.

It used to be a no hassle deal for Canadians to bring hunting firearms to the USA. It certainly has changed with possibly a 6 week wait before you get the needed paperwork.
I keep one rifle in the US so as not to have that hassle but suspect I would have some explaining to do with my dual status if I ever got checked out.

  BBF, do you or anyone esle here know if a export permit is needed to bring a barrel out of the US.  Is it the same in all states or is it state by state.  Looking at getting a barrel from the classifieds.  Any info will be appreciated.

I've shipped two barrels to Canada with no problems, there are no restrictions on them listed by the USPS, you can't ship firearms, but parts and reloading components aren't a problem, I've also shipped bullets to your fine country with no problems. ;) I know Mitchell has sold at least one barrel to Fred in Canada, in fact I think both of Fred's H&Rs came from the classifieds here, but I know for a fact one did.

Regs are different for dealers on scopes and international sales, an export permit is required which significantly adds to the cost, but individuals can without a permit, I've shipped scopes to Canada before too, they're bought and sold regularly on ebay to and by Canadians.  ;)

I seriously believe the "Liberal" U.S. Government is useing the Canadian, Australian and U.K. Governments as models in stupidity.  How many firearms went across the border with the trappers, traders, settlers and indians?  Who knew or cared?  We and the Canadians are supposed to be "Free" people.  We need to get it together and exercise that right.  Now we're all presumed guilty until proven otherwise.  It's just backassward.

  I've talked to the CFC (Canadian Firearms Centre) and they told me that a rifle can be brought back but it has to be registered to you before you get it to the border.  So basically you have to find a rifle there, do what you have to do there to buy it and then register it here.  To register it here you need the serial number, barrel lenght, action type and number of shot to get your certificate.  You need that ticket and present it at the border when you declare the rifle.
  I also found out that i can bring back 8 Kg (about 16 lbs) of powder, bullets and up to 5000 primers and loaded rounds.  Never checked out the price on rounds but powder and bullets are about 2/3 the price here.
  Anywaya I got around the rifle problem as I've bought a barrel from the classifieds here.  Should have the 45-70 here in a couple of weeks.  Fingers crossed.
  Next question, can the H&R be loaded to the Ruger 1 loads not that I need to just would like to know.

How bout the bc? And what do you mean by proper fit? Is that somethin that you can count on from factory?

Cliff bought a used barrel that needs proper fitting, and being in Canada, can't have H&R fit it. The BC uses the same SB2 frame as a Handi which is factory chambered in 500S&W with higher pressures and bigger a case head.
