Bought a LNIB 1975 CVA Mountain Rifle (45) to go with the early 70's CVA dueler (45) and 1973 CVA Squirrel rifle (36). Just a fluke they all turned out to be CVA's - but they are also also very early ones either unfired or nearly so. No, I am not the poster child for CVA. :wink: Now I'm going to settle down and start shooting all three of these before I go find that custom full stock I still want. Appreciate all your input and suggestions gents - it helped a lot, and I expect there'll be more questions as I go through the process of getting back into BP after dropping it 30 years ago.

Still need to find a deal on a lead pot and get more moulds and handles, but I think I have everything else just about covered accessory wise.

Through until you find the next one that you NEED if you are like me anyway

I have a 45 cal mountain rifle just like the one you bought. I got it as a kit in 1976 and it has been a very good gun. It shoots a rb very accurate and also a tompson style maxi ( cast my own ) very acurate for the slow rate of twist.
70 grains of black behind that maxi ball has dropped several deer and has always went clean thru.

Nice to find someone else with the same older s'pole. If I may be so bold... what ball diameter, patch thickness and load are you using for RB?

Expect it will 2 1/2 weeks before I see the rifle, but the 45 dueler will be here tomorrow on the brown truck.

What mine likes is plain ole pillow ticking and a .440 ball. It is very tight to load but will drive nails. The ticking kind of varies between .012 and.015. A .438 dia ball is a little easier to load and is almost as accurate so thats what I use most of the time. Works for mine... I here there were some inconsistency in those earlier CVA barrels so these may not work for your gun but it is a good starting point.... Let me know how the lead flies after your 1st go around with it.
