What do you think?

Found a flaw in the stock on my M98 .25-06 last night, the picture says it all.



Do you think I could save this stock and modify it to fit my Handi's?  I'd hate for this stock to just end up as firewood, however that is about all it is good for right now.

Yes, it is more than likely possible you could make (or have some one make) a buttstock and matching forearm for a Handi from that stock..don't burn it yet....<><....:)

You have no idea!  I was really depressed last night as this rifle has taken me almost 4 years to put together.  I found the action and had dreams of a classic custom rifle that I could use to take pronghorn. 

Here are some pics of how it used to look.  I had a little barrel inletting to do as the channel was a little tight on one side.  I took the barreled action out of the stock, which I accidentally knocked off of my work bench and when it hit the floor the broken stock is what I got.

I don't know squat about wood working. I am wondering if this was perhaps a good thing that it broke before you had it come apart on you during a hunt.

It would have had me mad enough to leave the rifle right where it broke if I had been afield on a hunt.  However it would have made little difference as I don't have to hunt that far from home, and I always have a back up available.  I've already got another stock coming in to put on it so I should have the rifle ready to hunt by Oct 3rd. 

My biggest problem I think fitting this to a Handi will be drilling the stock to bolt the action on.  That is going to take one long drill bit! :o

That is repairable. I had a stock break at the wrist, splintered and all. Had it repaired by a Gunsmith here in Phoenix and no one could tell it was repaired. He could do wonders with wood. He finally hung up his business in January of this year, he was 85 years old.
Just ask around, and get it repaired.

That is one very nice piece of wood, and I hate to see it in that condition.... though given that, it would make an awesome looking Handi setup :o 8)

Like Hawk said you can do it. You were already going in that dirrection when it happened. Do the glueback first to see if you can hide the break. You might have to refinish the whole thing. If you are satisfied with the result you can then inlet inside the channel and bed some wide flat metal strips to avoid breaking the forearm in the same place again in the future. You have a cross grain in the forearm rather than a grain that runs with the length of the forearm.

If it doesn't work you can still cut it in two for the Handi.

I know it could be repaired but would you trust this rifle to hunt after that though?  This may not be the only flaw in the wood to show its ugly head.  Talked with Gunstocks Inc. over the weekend they want $350 to make it into a Handi Stock.  To rich for my blood right now so looks like I'll be attempting it on my own if I decide not to have it repaired.

It would be easier to fix it up back to where it was than to make a stock set for an H&R out of the pieces. And yes, it would safe to hunt with, stronger after repair than it was before....I also have had a stock fixed before. You could not see the crack after the reapir  and it has never let me down, and it was fixed over 35 years ago....<><....:)
