Choosing between only those 2, I'd get the 4200.  I just am not crazy about the low end Leupolds.  If I was considering a Leupold, I would start at the VX II and go up from there.  I have a 4200 in 6-24 X 50 and it's great glass.  I mostly put Burrises on my hunting rigs though.  Nikon Buckmasters are great too.  I would rate these scopes as follows for hunting rifles.  4200 is best but overkill, Burris FF II, Bushnell 3200, Nikon Buckmasters, and Leupold VX II are all tied for second in my book and the VX I and Rifleman are tied for last.

As much as I love Elite 4200s I would never buy one in 3-9 and for the life of me I do not understand how it can be called a 4200 which by definition has a 4X magnification range on all their scopes EXCEPT that one. To me it's NOT an Elite 4200 but merely an over priced 3200.

I'd go with the Leupold on this choice tho I do agree a VX-II would be nicer the old Vari-X II is basically the current VX-I and I've never seen a problem with the old Vari-X II 3-9.

The 4200 will have better glass. The VX-1 will have more eye relief.

I prefer the 4200s and would even go 3200 before the VX1.  You are choosing between pretty darn good and a bit better.look at the 4200 2.5-10x40, it is a great scope.

The VX-1 isn't close to the 4200 in clarity brightness and resolution. A much better comparison would be the VX-III vs. the 4200

I can never compare a Bushnell to a Leupold, my money is best spend on the best for overall Quality, Price and Customer Service, so Leupold consistently wins.  The only VX-I, I own is a rimfire scope and it is very clear and the highest quality for the price.

I choose Leupold every time without hesitation over Bushnell, Burris or Nikon.
