8mm or 8.57js

In a yugo mauser model 98 chambered for the 8x57js,can 8mm mauser be fired safely from it?

8mm and 8x57js are the same round.  You'll see the 8mm only wording alot on the US manufactured rounds, which by the way are underpowered.
You really want to look for 8x57 loads from Europe (S&B, HotShot, Norma, mil-surplus) for full power loads the rifle was designed for.

And...no such thing as a dumb question  ;)

Most of the 8mm ammo you see advertised today is the 7.92x57mmjs or the 8mm Mauser round.  Sellier and Bellot and PRVI sell new ammo that is reloadable.  Remington sells American spec 8mm cases.  There is a lot of surplus available and I would recommend Yugo or Chech surplus.  Turkish ammo may be spotty or even higher pressured. 

When you order, just specify that the ammo is for a K98 WWII vintage Mauser rifle and you will get the correct ammo.

J is for infantry round.
S is .323" bore.
