What calls do you guys use?
« on: February 10, 2004, 10:45:09 AM »
what calls are you guys using, electronic and hand calls?

I'm currently using a Johny Stewart PC1 distress call.  Since it's getting into the mating season I'll start using a J-S CYC-2 mega howler, probably without the big "mega" cone attached.

I'm curious what others are using and having good luck with.

Do all of my calling with my own mouth calls (well duh) and muzzleloaders now days.   Just me against old wiley, and none of those modern miracles.   Went out last Saturday with the 45 cal. Mountain Rifle front stuffer and called in a double with these two calls.    They snuck in from the side and I didn't see them until only 20 yards away - got caught with the rifle laying on my lap.   Yep, they did the exit stage right thing.   I tracked them as they ran through the thick Joshua, creosote and cactus and did get a quartering shot as one went over a small rise about 65 yards out.   Shot was shoulder high and about a foot too much lead for the 50 gr. of 3F Black.   Only excuse is this was my first time out shooting this rifle and had only tried the load earlier that morning with a few shots to see where it shot to at 50 & 100 yards.   So.....   Coyote 2 - Piefoot 0

Antler howler is one I made over 30 years ago - the W2K has a new muted jack "gurgle" reed I am expereimenting with.   Will be back out on the 3-day weekend but will carry the much lighter 36 cal smokepole this time in the snow and gumbo mud.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

   Those are some very fine looking calls.  I don't even want to look at my plastic ones now!  I tried to go out to your sight and it said it was under maintenance.  Can you tell me when it'll be back up?

Anybody else have calls they use that pale in comparison to the ones Labode has pictured but work really well?

Or anyone that has used the Johny Stewart mega howler?  I've used it only once last fall and called in a couple but they wouldn't get close and we just exchanged challenged barks for a minute or two before I bit down on the reed wrong and let out a bark that sounded like I was run over by a lawn mower...  Needed more practice...  :?

Anyway, I'm going to take the megaphone off of it and give it a try in "dog howler" mode without the "mega" and see how it works.  Sounds more like a pup howler, but I'll give it a try.

Anyone used it?  Do I have the wrong reed in which is causing it to sound like a pup?

Scruffy

I couldnt afford one of those electrics when I got started so I used the mouth calls. Finally caught on then was doing well enough to completely forget about them. Mouth calls include OLT, Burnham, quakerboy, Knight &Hale, and my favorite...the Mallardtone short range call.
The reed in the Mallardtone is about 1/3 smaller than most, and you can really make this thing talk!

Ladobe
Can you tell us more on the gurgle reed and the sounds you get? Sometimes I will bend the reed on my howler up sharply at the end, then purr into the thing while trilling my tonge on roof of my mouth.
Can get a decent bird in distress.

Hey Scruffy....

I use mouth calls only.  Some of the calls I use are:

Burnam Bros rabbit screamer.
Sceery Jack rabit.
Sceery Cow Elk call (does a GREAT pup squeal)
Vermanator's Tweety
E.L.K Power howler (brand new, haven't even taken it out yet)
And my favorite right now is the Tally Ho.

The Tally Ho is the most verstile call I have.  I can make a lot of different sounds with it.

The tweety call from Verminators does a great woodpecker distress call if you can trill your tongue.
You haven't hunted......Until you've hunted the hunters

I'll vouch for the versalitility of the tally-ho.  Although I am fairly new to calling I seem to be able to make the tally-ho sound more realistic from the coyote howl down to the rabbit distress.

Dezertyote, what do you use to finish the calls in different colors?  I'm thinking of maybe doing a rifle stock up like one of those calls.  The green would look good on my calling rifle.

I do like those colors. My hastily pocketed calls end up on the ground more often than not.

Hey Guy's,

I'm a collector of predator calls, these are some that other callmakers have made for my collection. I'll post some other pics. after this.

I myself do make calls, but their turkey box calls. I'll post a pic of them also.

The first set of calls that I posted are TNT predator calls made by Lynn Jacobson out of Utah, here is his web site...

www.tntpredatorcalls.com

The second set of predator calls that I posted are some awesome  hand carved calls made by a fellow out of Seattle, W.  he goes by the name of KrustyKlimber, his calls are called Krusty Kriers. Heres his web page.

I hunt fairly close to a housing tract and have found that a rubber band can imitate a domestic cat pretty well.

-Red Desert howler(long and short range)
-Austin howler(short range)
-Dan Thompson PC1, PC2, and PC3(depending on what kind of terrain i am hunting and what kind of rabbits are around, ex. jacks, eastern and western cottontails)
-Weems Call (rabbit)
-Crit'R Call Pee Wee (mainly use for pup squalls)
-Tally Ho (just about anything short range)
-Crow call (coyotes follow crows)
-Any number of turkey calls (use as turkey call or mouth howlers)

My personal favorite is the Red Desert Howler.  It takes a while to break in the mouth piece, but once i have it broken in, it is my most versatile call.  You can do long and short range calls, depending on if you use the extension or not.  You can do just about every call with this one tool.[/i]
