Chamfer tool for 1911 barrel?
« on: August 23, 2009, 04:07:57 PM »
Is there a tool out there to chamfer the lands on a 1911 barrel?  A budy of mine has a norinco 1911 and wants to shoot cast bullets with it for wild bunch matches.  My kimber and his custom colt have an angle cut on the start of the lands, the norinco won't chamber the cast bullets he's using with out forcing them, and they engrave the nose of the bullet.  The bullet is sized .451.  Basicly the start of the lands have sharp edges.

Thanks

There is a tool from Brownells to chamber the lands as you put it; in a revolver the process is referred to as relieving the forcing cone to about 11 degrees.  The process is intended to improve accuracy.

You didn't say what cast bullet your friend wanted to use but before I relieved the forcing cone I would try seating the bullets a tad deeper, that should help chambering.  HTH.

Thanks.  I'm not sure of the number, but pretty sure it's a lee mold that is basicly the same as the old military hardball.  I normaly use a round nose lee mould that has a slight step.  Opon reflection I beleive the step is for the this very reason.  But my kimber and his colt have the chamfer and will chamber them fine.  How would you know if a replacement barrel would have the chamfer?  He doesn't have a lot of the bullets, so probably after this he'll go to something like what I use.

BTW, he did seat the bullets deeper, and they chamber now, but still engrave the nose of the bullet a little bit.  Before at standard overall length they wouldn't chamber at all, but would in my kimber and his colt.

I basicly told him the cheapest thing to do since the gun shoots decently with factory and my cast loads is just use a differant bullet.

Will:  I think I know that slug you are talking about and when I loaded and shot those I found I had to slightly roll the crimp over that forward step to get mine to chamber too.

If you go to pick up a new barrel and you want to know if the rifling is chamfered, just look - you should be able to plainly see the chamfered lands/rifling at the front of the chamber.

I think your advice is on the mark but I also think the chamfering tool from Brownells is fairly inexpensive and might cost about what a box of bullets costs these days.  Hope this helps.

Thanks, but picking one up is easy to check, ordering a differant story.  I guess if he decides to buy a new barrel he could call or email them.

Thanks,

What you need to do is call Dave Manson (Manson Precision Reamers) at (810)953-0732. What you need is a .45 Caliber pistol thoater. Be sure to get a T-handle to use with it. It will take the lands out of the barrel .001 over the size of the bullet. I have used this item on several .45 caliber barrels and love the result. It improves accuracy, and a person can load alot heftier loads. Some people freebore their barrel .2 to .3". I did mine .5".
