American made wheel gun?
« on: April 01, 2009, 05:45:49 AM »
What double action revolvers are made in the U.S.A?

Not just made for a company in the US or assembled in the US but MADE here.

I am thinking about a 3-4" 38 or 357 if that narrows things down a little.

I thought Ruger was but didn't see anything on there sight. Seems strange.
Wasn't sure about S&W.

Did find one Charter Arms has American made all over there site.

I asked at the gun shop and they weren't sure.

I guess it also depends on your definition of "American made".  Ruger, and I believe Charter Arms, are made in America by AMERICAN OWNED companies.  So many of the traditional American arms manufacturers are now actually owned by foreign companies or investment firms that it's sometimes hard to figure out what is truly American made and what isn't.
I'm not sure if the company that now owns S&W is American or foreign???

It's kind of like the auto industry.  Is a Toyota that's built in North Carolina "American made"??  How about a GM car that's built in Mexico or a Ford built in Canada???  The lines have become blurred!

There are no American made cars.

I am talking from raw chunks of  metal to test fire right here in one of our 50 states.

I would also prefer the CEOs to live in the states. Between vacations anyway.

Ruger, S&W, and Charter Arms all produce  double action revolvers in the U.S., and Colt is said to be about to re-introduce a model or two. All Freedom Arms guns and all current and recent production of United States Firearms (USFA) revolvers are also made in the U.S. but they are all single actions. Dan Wesson no longer has revolvers in production, since their acquisition by CZ.
As an aside to someone's comment above, S&W is owned by Saf-T-Hammer, a U.S. Company founded by a former S&W employee.

So Ruger S&W & charter are about it for current production.

I would love to find a used gun.
You can count the used revolvers in Enid OK on one hand lately.

Check the used gun market for a Colt Official Police revolver, alot of them got worn alot but were seldom fired, so they just need to be reblued to make them new again.

It is a strong weapon, very capable of +P loads.

Its a shame if you ask me! I really wish colt or dan wesson would get back in the da game. I get sick of 686 vs gp100 threads. Or at the very least taurus could cut 80% of their catalog and sell a couple field revolvers that worked.

If you are thinking of a steady diet of full power .357 Mag, the L frame S& W or Ruger is the main choice.  S&W made everything from J thru N in .357 mag but only the L & N frame will take lots of .357.  Rugers no problem but the SP100 could benifit from a Hogue grip. 8)
