Went fishing
« on: August 31, 2009, 08:51:14 AM »
This morning was the first time I had been fishing in our pond. I caught three bream. They were to small to keep so back in the pond they went. I spent more time straighting out the line than I did fishing.  I was using my new rod and reel and the line kept tangling up. GB was also have the same problem with his new rod and reel so it wasn't just me.  He will be putting new line so we won't have the same problem next time we decide to go fishing.

Since we have some pretty nice size catfish and bass in the pond these days I picked us up some heavier duty rods. Normally we fish only with ultra light rods and reels but the size of some of the cats in there I don't know if the little ultra light outfits with four pound test line will get the job done. I caught three large catfish and one smaller one plus one bream before we gave up on the tangling line. I'd guess my three large ones went three pounds give or take a bit. I need to get a scale to weight them on so I can stop guessing. the smaller one was at most a pound and I'm pretty sure was hatched in the pond and not one I bought for it.

I don't know what kinda line was on the reels mine a Shakespeare and hers a Zebco but it has gonna go before our next trip to the pond. We tossed them all back in cuz I'm too dang lazy to clean them.

Phil just got back with the mail and says the beavers are back and there is a tree across the driveway. I do have a permit to shoot them so I guess I need to get down there after them.

So far they've won all the battles but the war isn't over yet. I'll likely go down this evening hoping it returns for the tree it has down. Doing so while I'm there will be a fatal mistake. I only need to win one battle to end the war as I think for now only one beaver is visiting.

The beaver won tonight's round. I gave up before it showed up but then it might or might not show up at all. I've waited a bunch of nights and not seen it yet.

Greybeard, one thing I noticed when I have bought any new rod and reel combo. Seems the company's always overfiled the reel, and especially with lighter line,4#-6# test, the line wants to tangle up. If you havn't already done it, you might want to take 30 or 40 yds. off the reel. gypsyman

sounds like the line is twisted. Try paying off 40-50 yard of it then rewinding
it with some tension, hold it between fingers that usually works.

If you notice of all the big time fisher men on TV that make big money fishing
none of them have scales either, must be a reason. ;D

Just curious... Is bream your regional name for bluegill?  Or do you really have bream in your pond?

Nope slim to me fishing and swimming are two totally different activities. I've caught them on trot line, rod and reel and by cane pole.

Well kinda sorta. Bream or brim is a name given to a variety of panfish mostly all members of the sunfish family. Bluegill are called bream and are in my pond as are shell crackers also called by other names but to me they all are just bream.

Haven't really checked Faye's Zebco but my Shakespeare was kinda over full. Still I don't think that's the problem as it's not so much the tangle at the reel as it getting tangled around the end of the rod. The line seems to not be very limp and as if by magnetic attraction wants to wrap itself around the end of the rod. Maybe it's just the way new line is these days but I never had so much troule with the line I used to use.

Sometimes  spinning reels will twist the line so they do that (wrap around the tip) .  Might try a tee tiny swivel next to the bait for lure.

The line is twisted. It happens when you reel a spinning reel when the fish is pulling out line. Don't reel unless you are able to gain line on the fish. "Pump and reel." Just strip off several yards of line and you will get to good (untwisted) line. Cut off the twisted line and you should be good to go.
If you were in a boat I would say just drop the line back for several yards while boat is moving forward, no hook just line, and it will untwist it's self.

Hope that helps.
