Trigger Job & Scope for SRH 454
« on: August 25, 2009, 03:29:33 PM »
Hello.

Picked up a SRH 454 7.5" five months ago when Sportsman Warehouse was closing shop in Minnesota.  Until that time the most powerful handgun I owned was a .357 Smith and Wesson Model 19.  Wow!!  at first it was quite a shock, but after weekly sessions at the range shooting only 6 rounds per session, extensive use of snap caps mixed in, firing my .22 before and after,  I can now usually put six rounds in a 9" pie plate at 50 yards offhand with open sights.  Certainly not an expert, but pretty happy with the progress, elimination of flinching,  and what a fun pistol to shoot!  Only shot off the bench first time out to sight in so I'm not sure just how tight it can shoot, but the trigger sure seems like it could be better. Seriously considering using it for hunting.

Would I see marked tightening of groups with trigger work, is there an easy aftermarket trigger solution?  Any recommendations?

Regarding the scope I'm looking at buying a Bushnell Elite Handgun scope.  The reviews from Cabela's website are A+  Just wondering if there are any other proven options up to the $300 range?

Thanks for the help.

I think the best you MIGHT be able to do is a Wolfe Spring Tune Up kit.  Really, I'd send it out to someone who knows how to do a proper trigger...I use Mag-Na-Port Arms for example but there are many others.  It's worth the money.  As far as a scope...I'd email Redhawk1...he's the bigbore revolver guy and he'll steer you in the right direction.

As far as scopes, I've been quite happy with my Leupold M8 2x (paid about $220 for it a few years back) on my SRH in .454.  Also, I've found dryfiring helps smooth out a revolver quite a bit.

I have a red dot with no power 0x on mine, I did have a 2x but found it difficult to find a moving deer with the 2x, even if the deer was only walking.  Because I missed a nice buck with the 2x I changed to a red dot, I diden't miss the shot, I was unable to find the deer in the scope so never fired.  Now I have taken a number of deer with the red dot.  I would think that if your hunting open country or farmland a 2x would be great.  I hunt woodland which is sometimes thick.

contact Ruger and tell them how bad the trigger is and they may do it for FREE!

You are funny!!!

Of all the guns I own, almost all my Rugers (except for a#1), more than a dozen in all, revolvers and rifles go to the gun smith.  This year alone, I had and am in the process of having three ruger rifles rebuilt and I'm going to purchase a couple of blackhawks that'll go to smiths for work as well.

Ruger fix triggers.....good one!

Hey , drdougrx ,   I hate to pee in your pot..........but...I had to send my SRH in for some repairs , totally unrelated to the trigger.  I explained to them the problems I was having , cylinder was jamming up every 3-5 rounds.  Long story short.......they fixed everything....including a creepy, hard to pull trigger.  According to an inexpensive RCBS trigger guage , when I had sent it in  , it had a 6 1/2 # pull (yes thats in single action mode) after I got it back, it had a 4 # pull.......and no creep , and smooth !

I must say , about every Ruger rifle I own has been in for a trigger job..the handguns are'nt much better, I just get used to them !

I can say nothing bad about Ruger.......they 've always treated me right.  Though , I've not had a whole lot go wrong with my Rugers either.

Hey Irold,

Glad you've had good luck with them. I've never heard of the factory doing an on purpose trigger job.  Yours came out well....good for you!!

I've had a mini that went back 3 times for jamming with all kinds of ammo and a security six that went back twice for a cylinder that would bind when it got hot and, a speed six that went back because the cylinder could be turned while cocked.

Having said that....I still buy rugers more than any other guns and plan to buy more.  Even though I mess with them, these days smithing is my preference.

Maybe I was lucky.....Or maybe you've had a lot more Rugers than I have.  I've had a mimi 14 for about 6 years.......ready for this...it has never jammed !   never missed a beat !  I've used mostly lake city stuff, along with a limited amount of Wolf.  But there has been a lot of odd boxes of this and that went through....never jammed.  My SRH 454 has been the dark horse so to speak.....went back once, has worked fine ever since.  Without boasting , I have or have had many rugers....triggers all mostly sucked, but they're still built like tanks.  My son has a Smith 29 mountain gun with the 4" barrel....lay it beside my 4" Redhawk and start comparing.  Maybe it doesn't need to be that beefy...but I like it that way !    No matter , good luck with your rugers.... regards   IROLD

I certainly agree IROLD...they are beefy.  I suspect I'll own a few more before I kick the bucket!  I love the minis...I can remember at least 4 that I've owned...they're like Star PDs to me (now there's an oldie but goody :D), I really lik'm but seem to sell them off after a while!

I've bought 1 Ruger rifle and 2 handguns, a .45 Colt Redhawk and a .454 SRH, in the last year or so and have no issues with trigger pulls. I must really be lucky. I am convinced they are doing a better job as in the past I needed do a tune-up. ;D
