I'll make one more post on this thread and then I'm done.
I have been steadily communicating with Dutch Schoulz and would like to hereby recommend to anyone having trouble shooting a front loader to contact him at:

Although I have 30 years experience with black powder, it is all related to cartridge guns so I have been frustrated a few times with my smokepoles. However, the results I got with the .45 were so impressive that I had to try it with an old .54 Uberti that I could never get to shoot with round balls. Although I am still not using Ballistol, I am now using Dutch's recommendations on patch thickness and powder charge. The good news is that after a few shots settling in and determining what was best, I fired a 3 shot group at 50 yds that can be covered with a nickel. I can't figure out how to post a picture here but I have a .jpg photo if anyone needs to see the proof.
Thanks again to Dutch and anyone else who posted helpful comments. I now have a .54 Hawken that will group well under an inch at 50 yds with a full 80 grs of FFFg. That should kill anything on the continent if I hold it right.
