Well i'm 6 days away from opening of my season. My buddy that lives in
Cimarron has been talk to 2 different camps at night on the cel ph. Both camps
say elk are just now starting  to gather up, they say we should be there just right.
one camp is down low, dry few elk, some bear, water holes low or dry.
other camp up higher, good water holes lots of elk, some really good bulls
lots of bear. Since the elk have just started thinking about the rut maybe
we will get lucky.

OK!
Iam back "no elk" to warm until last day. we saw elk 5 out of 7 days, not in rut and not talking, saw 2 very good bulls 5x5 and a 6x6, lots of 4x4 and spikes.
my son got a shot at about 15yards but clipped a twigg. It is rough on an old fat man at 10,000-10,500 feet. We were camped at about 9,600 feet and
only found elk above that. We were just over the hill from Angel Fire, N.M.(8500ft) The last night we got about 2 inches of snow, i'm sure that started
the rut but too late for us. We had a good time first time in a long tome we have got together for that long, my son is 36 and works all over the Country.
it was a really good time, he has the elk bug bag says he is going to go on a job in Utah next so he can hunt elk some more.

I did see one Black Bear, but it was keeping an eye on some campers picnic tables as we were going between Red River and Angel Fire, pretty easy to figure what was on his mind..

Rex,
Sorry to hear that you didn't connect with an Elk. Spending the week with your son probably made up for it. Spending time with my son would equal a successful hunt for me!

Sounds like you had a good time Rex, even if no Elk was taken. You'll get him next time. That bear was obviously Yogi out looking for picnic baskets. ;)
