Stevens Model 39A (old mod59)?
« on: February 21, 2004, 04:53:12 AM »
The only info I can find on this gun anywhere is the model 59. This is definitely a model 39A. The Stevens model 39 listed in the Gun Traders is a smaller "pocket" shotgun. I can find no info on the 39A and I guess this stumps everyone as I got no replies on my last post.
There are no serial numbers anywhere on the gun. I would just like to know when it was produced.

Take a look at this exploded drawing of a 39A.

Savage didn't use serial numbers prior to the Gun Control Act of 1968.

Saw your earlier post and have not been able to find any info as to manufacture date. I have a model 59 that belonged to my late stepfather.
Unfortunately,I have no way to date it. I do know he had it in 1957 when he and my mom married. It looked old to a twelve year old at that time. I also know he and I took many rabbits and squirrels with it over the years.

J. Stevens Arms Co was taken over by Savage Arms Co. in 1920. However they continued to manufacture firearms under the Stevens name.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I continue to search for more history on these older guns.

I don't believe these could be rifled to accept the .45LC cartridge. Doesn't appear to enough meat in the barrel to survive rifling. Just my thought.

Iknow, I've searched high and low for any info on the 39A and come up wishin'.
The lettering on this is so old that it is hard to see without a glass but the blue is real good on it.
It also reads" 410 Bore Proof Tested"  just blelow the J Stevens Arms Co and Chicoppee Falls Mass USA letters.
On the side of the barrel reads" 21/2 and 3 inch shells"

Well I still can't pinpoint it but I did find out that the lettering"J Stevens Arms Co." started in 1920 and stopped in 1947 so it has to have been made in that time.
