I have made several items at this point, many years ago I made a holster for a 45 auto that didn't fair to well, so I presumed that I was leather work challenged, Well 20 years later a Tandy leather store re-opens in town and I try my hand at it again and it appears that I am not leather work challenged I am just not a leather carver, I am a stamper, to get my feet wet I made some spur straps turned out pretty well, then I made a gun belt for myself and learned a few lessons, that one did not turn out as well as I would have liked, So I tried again and the belt turned out really nicely
Of course I was making this one for my brother in law, I posted some pics of it on the net, so I made a nice holster to go with it, My dad was a carver and very good at making just about anything you would care to mention, when he passed away the leather working stuff found its way to two unappreciative grand kids, where it just sat and got dusty, I retreived my dad's stuff and got started on a new hobby! I will continue to practice my carving but in making several projects I have honed many skills such as cutting out the blanks for many projects. some thing that still eludes me a bit is cartridge loops, the leather that comes with the gunbelt kit is pretty thick and does not form around the shells too well I made a holster and belt for a buddies son for Christmas and it is for a Ruger single six so he needs 22 cal loops obviously the thicker material is not going to work so I bought a calf skin and made the loops from that and they turned out really nice, I may offer my Brother in law a replacement belt with the new design loops! Big Ed has made me a Quigley belt and it is very very well done of course he has a few years experience on me! I made mistakes when I ordered it and Big Ed made it again with the corrections he didn't have to do that! he stands behind his work even if it ain't his fault!
