Savage 219 Fun Has Begun

I've had my eye out, for a Savage 219, at New England gun shows and local gunshops for a million years, w/o even seeing one.......until today. 

I called a local shop, to see if a pistol I had seen there a few days ago was still unsold or not - but since the phone was always busy, I took a ride instead.  Good thing.

At first, I was disappointed, since the pistol I was interested in was gone/sold - but I figured that since I was already there, why not look around anyway ?

Well - there in the used gun rack was the Savage 219, I had always pined for, a 219B Hornet !

I can't wait until the end of my week-long waiting period, to try it out & get some pics up - I'm on cloud nine, for sure.

(Now.......... IF.... I can get my mitts on a .30-30 barrel for it.....Hmmmm...   )

my grandpa use to have  a savage 219 in hornet w/ a spare 20 gauge barrel. according to my dad my granda pa used it as his regular deer gun in PA.  I have a HR 157 and a contender in Hornet. I have taken a doe years ago with the hornet.  I also have a 22-250 but I shoot the hornet way more.

unfornately when my grandpa was alive he let my aunts then current husband barrow it. the a divorce happened and the gun was never seen again.

That's a sad story for you, Todd - some folks just don't do "the right thing".
I know it happens often, but that doesn't make it any less a bitter pill.

I ordered a New England Custom Gun .22 Grooved Receiver Peep Sight for the Savage - so when it arrives next Monday (or so), the scope'll come off and I'll see how far off zero/high it shoots with the issue front sight.

Does anyone know how to remove the rear barrel sight ?

It doesn't look like a normal rear sight dovetail, but rather a sheet metal front end that has side ears, pinched into a slot/notch on either side of the barrel.
The issue rear sight looks exactly like the one on an old 22/410.

I got my wish - thanks to fellow GBO forum member maglvr44 !

I had opined, in my OP, that I would like to find a .30-30 barrel for my Savage 219B - and he was kind enough to provide me the contact info, for a gunsmith in his area that had one for sale !

It arrived today, and I am more than pleased !

The bore cleaned up into pristine condition, the original longleaf folding sights are still on it, and the bluing is close to 100% except for a bit of fading blue over the chamber - which I took care of in the first half-hour !

[EDIT: Through no one's fault, but my own ignorance, I can't use this .30-30 barrel on my Savage 219B, since it came off a Model 219 (no "B", "C", or "L") and doesn't have or use the cocking stud that protrudes from the side of later ("B/C/L") barrel's locking lugs.
 
I was unaware that, while later "219 B/C/L", barrels can be used and will function on the earlier 219 rifles, Model "219" barrels will not recock the later "B/C/L", actions for the next shot when broken open.

You see,  the early models were striker-fired and toplever-cocked - while the following/later models had the internals changed to a hidden swinging hammer that's cocked via opening the barrel, and has a cocking arm lying inside their right receiver wall just in back of the hinge pin.

So - Into the classifieds it must go !]

Is the 220 shotgun action the same as the 219? Is the 219 stronger or is there any other difference? - DON

AFAIK, the 220's are the same as the 219's, Don - unlike the different Handi's.

There ARE different 220's, early/late - just as I described the different 219's above.

IIRC, Savage actually built some on 220-marked actions; and multiple barrel rifle/shotgun sets were also marketed.

A local gunsmith has a factory-boxed 3 barrel set, that will most likely go to his estate some day, since he's not letting loose of it anytime soon.

Two 30--30's one a combo with 16 ga barrel, top lever cocking,1 .22h barrel,  One 220 .410...forgot whichaway it cocks... One 20 ga. with top lever cocking and 1 20ga. with the trip lever in receiver type cocking..:-) need a twelve ga..:-(

I have two 219s, one in 30-30 with a receiver sight and a scoped one in 22 K Hornet.  Sure like them, have taken a number of deer with the 30-30.  Am alwayslooking for other rifle barrels.

Here is my current 219, a 30/30 with the classic old Weaver J4 scope. It has taken several deer but just is not the tack drive like one I had 20 years ago and foolishly sold. That one would hold five 165 grain spirepoints under an inch. This one goes more like 2.5-3" with about any load I've tried. I also have owned 219's in Hornet and K-Hornet but they likewise were not especially accurate.

WOW, hadn't paid any attention to much in the single shot column other then #1s, but the "219" thread posted back aways, caught my eye.

If this is the rifle I think it is, my father had one in 30/30 back when I was about 6 years old, which puts it back 60 years.

He loaned it to the pastor of our church, who went out and took his deer the first day with one shot.

Dad then gave him the rifle.

I never shot the rifle, but back then anything that made that big of bang was of interest to me.

That hasn't changed a lot in those 60 years.
