slim, your onto something. Most people have to much time on their hand. More work, alittle less playtime. People would realize what are more important things in life. gypsyman

Most of the kids i talk to barely can speak understandable english could not locate 10 states on a map and certainly would die rather than put in a hard days work. that also applies to the majority of males under the age of 40.

Slim Rem 7, you sure are on to something.  My grandson spent a week with us last summer (2008).  I asked him if he ever play marbles and he didn't even know what they were.  The same with my granddaughter, I asked her if she ever played jacks and she didn't know what they were.

I bought a couple of sacks of marbles and some jacks and put them up waiting for another visit from them.

The next time they come they will learn something new.

The wife and I have seen some hard times over the past 50 years, we grew up in an era where few houses had TVs and air conditioning was a luxury for the very wealthy.  We survived, and managed to raise a family prospered through hard work and thrifty practices and now have a fairly easy life.  Most of the things mentioned we could do without, but the air is a must at this stage of life.  Our air went out a few weeks ago, it was during a period we were experiencing 100 degree weather, we spent a very miserable night even with a ceiling fan and four windows opened in the bedroom.

I remember when we first married, I was stationed in Shreveport, La, we had an apartment with no air, and it was built in a manner which did not afford much breeze for cooling, we managed to get by, but I wouldn’t  want to go back to that style of life now.

My wife thinks I am crazy, but I wouldn't mind living like the Amish, except with solar or wind power for things like refrigeration.  Solar water heating, semi-underground home to take advantage of heating and cooling, Solar/wind power, just enough for refrigeration and supplement heat with firewood.  Cook with firewood.  Grow your own veggies, raise some livestock, supplement with hunting and fishing.  Hard work, but rewarding.

I think it would be a good compromise to survival.  Electricity for communications (TV, radio, internet), refrigeration, lighting, but utilise solar, wind, wood, and earth shelter where practical to cut energy use, especially in heating, water heating, and cooking.

Shootall, I use a hot water system to heat my house.  I would very much like to add a hot water solar collector to my roof to utilise the sun for heat and hot water.  Do you know how to install one.  I can't find a dealer around here to add a solar collector.  It would sure cut my gas bill in winter, and I am in the gas business.  I've thought about building my own collector.

around here the big thing is water stoves , the solar thing came and went in the 80's . Maybe a 1000 homes were built but the equipment started to fail and some were torn down and others were gutted of the solar equipment and remodeled .
If you have a supply of wood the water stove would be easy for you as you already heat with hot water , you would have unlimited hot water as a bonus .

Yes, the solar water heaters around here were 80 gallons because you had to store so much to use at night.  I guess wood would be better.  Use it when you need it.  Also, it is indirectly solar and wood can be stored.  Also, solar power requires batteries to work at night.
