Back in 1980... or it may have been the Spring of 1981, I bought a Smith & Wesson Model 28 Highway Patrol .357 revolver.  It's long gone.  The box is long gone.  But it came with a nice little screwdriver--with a fluted aluminum handle--and a bore mop and an aluminum cleaning rod.  They are all three in the original plastic sleeve.  I just threw the whole mess in my shootin' tool box, and it's been carried to the range umpteen times.  However, they haven't been used.  I was talking with this guy at the range the other day who said this set was worth some money--maybe even more than the pistol would be worth if I had kept it.  Said that pistols weren't hard to come by and that boxes weren't too hard either, but he said the tools usually got separated from the pistols and tossed out or used.

Soooooooo.... was he joshing me?  Are these really worth big bucks?  And, if so, where's the best place to find the collectors who will pay the big bucks?  I'm on ebay, and I'm on this forum.  I am NOT on gunbroker and WON'T be.  Best ideas and best guess of price range are appreciated.

He's pulling your leg. They have darn little value.

I am a collector/hoarded of S&W revolvers. If your "kit" is still sealed in the plastic bag it came in, it should be worth about $20 for that vintage (1980-ish).  Screwdrivers from the 1950s and older will bring over $100 alone...lots of variations, and collectors looking to complete a revolver with box and tools will pay that amount and more.

Be prepared to pay for them. The grips I mean.  I have been collecting them for a little while and I have some nice ones. They will run a "C" note and up, Usually, figure a "C" and a half.
Toroflow has an awesome collection of Smiths BTW. ;)

I have bought several sets of unopened tools like the ones you are referring to, and they usually run arounsd $30-35 a set these days.

eBay is a great place to buy & sell S&W grips & accesories.

I've owned several model 28s and all shot fine but, those cleaning kits and screwdrivers, I never could get them to group worth a darn? Not much value, I see them advertised for up to $25 but, have yet to hear of someone paying this?
