Any Contender Experimenter out there?
« on: October 04, 2003, 07:01:18 AM »
Living in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia and amoung the anti gun crowd, I have a problem with pesky crows & pigeons.  Now I was thinking of getting a .17 dia barrel blank and having one of the TC gunsmiths chamber it to use .177 airgun pellets powered by a shotgun primer.  Should be low report and not alarm the neighbors.  What are your thoughts?

I've found Aquila Colibri .22 primer powered round to be extreemly quiet when fired from my 10 inch contender barrel.  If you have one 14 inches or longer, they are quieter than any air rifle.   Not tack drivers but it does give the local english sparrows a sporting chance.

doc-and,

I am also trying to find the perfect crow barrel to protect my pecan trees.  I have tried the 17HMR but don't really like it.  I have a 17 Ack Hornet and have modified some cases to accept a 209 primer.  The .177 pellet works fine in the .172" bore.  This works for very short range- 10-15yds max.

I too have sued normal air gun pellets out of my 17 rem. I just use mag primers. it works good out to about 20 M.

If you have a 22 cal barrel you can do the same with 22 cal pellets I have used the 22 horner and mag primers to shoot the 20 M. into a old phone book and got about 30 pages of penetration.

You can look for a product called conert-a-pell  made by
Loch Leven industries
PO box 2751 santa rosa, Cal 95405   707-573-8735
Not sure if they are still in business or not but you could get adapters for a lot of barrels  not just 22 cal.

They may have something that will work for your needs at a way better price.

contendernut,

What would you estimate the noise level to be from your 17 Ackley Hornet barrel and what length barrel did you use.  Would like to use a 14inch barrel and 10 to 15 yard accuracy level would be fine as my yard is only 60 ft wide by 35 ft deep in the rear.  Probably most shots would be under 25 feet.

Hate to spoil the fun but you may want to check and see if there is a ordanace against "discharging a firearm" in your area. Some laws have different meanings but in ours it's taken as any weapon that burns powder and that includes primers.  Awhile back I asked our local police about using wax loads ect for pest control and he said it was alright except that if anything became of it I could be in deep trouble and probably get everything taken away. So I bought a Magnum pellet gun!

Of course you could just "become one" and bond with the pest's and politely ask them to leave you alone. :) Yeh Right!

Yea the local police do get a little touchy about the discharging of firearms!! :)  :) .  I remember about 15 years ago I was preparing cases for a 357 Herret and needed to fireform some cases, so I loaded them up with a couple of grains of bullseye and cornmeal and walked out the back door of my garage and proceeded to fire form the 10 cases.  After the 10th shoot I went back into my garage, cleaned the barrel and put the gun away, and started resizing the cases.  About that time a squad car is patroling the neighborhood so I strolled out to the curb and he pulled up beside me and asked if I heard any gun fire.  I told him I thought I heard some fire crackers down the street, and off he went, Lights flashing, tires squealing.  Went back to garage shut the door and went in and watched the tele. :)  :)   Last time I did any fireforming in the backyard.  Need to get out of here to a place where there is more room and fewer neighbors.

doc-and,

My are out of a 14" barrel.  It is quiter than a 22 rimfire but not as quite as a airgun.  It is similar to firing 209 caps in a ML if you have one.

Wouldn't it just be cheaper to go to the department store and buy a $40 air pistol?
