Summit Tree Stand Choices

I am interested in buying a Summit tree Stand. Cabelas has three on sale, the broadhead, Viper XLS, and Cobra XLS. I primarily bow hunt but during the primitive muzzleloader season I get out the flintlock. Any recommendations on which of these three I should buy?

You might want to check out the new models from Summit before you make a final decision. Here's a link-

I bought  a Broadhead Backpacker last year.  It's one of the stands that folds flat. Other than being a tad heavy to hike with I love it. It's extremely sturdy, very comfortable and easy to set up, even in the dark. I've noticed there are a bunch of new ones on Ebay selling at great prices.

Papellet...You need to ask yourself a couple questions...

1.  Do you want a climber with a bar in front of you?

This will make for easier climbing because you use the bar to sit on when climbing the tree.  It also makes you feel a little bit safer when up in the tree because you really cannot fall out.  Of course you still need to wear your safety harness.

2. Do you want a climber without a bar in front of you?

This will make it easier to make those close up archery shots that require you to shoot at an angle that you could not using a stand with a bar in front.

I actually have both...I bought a Summit Viper Extreme XL about 4 years ago with the bar in front and I love it...Last year I purchased the Cobra upper half and mated it with my Viper lower half and now I have two climbers using the same bottom...I love it...I use the Cobra for archery and switch over to the Viper for gun.

WNY_Whitetailer,

Thanks for the info, was wondering about bar/no-bar. Really helps to hear from you guys that have used these in the field. Narrowing my choices and looking at the new models that Dutch/AL gave me the link to.

My pleasure...Good luck making a choice when it comes to tree stands...There are so many to choose from it boggles the mind.  Summit is one of the best in my opinion.  They are a good place to start.

I agree, Summit has my vote. Prior to my cobra I used a  API climber. This one had a chain around the tree. Not bad till the plastic wears off then it's noiseier thsan you want, belive me. I bought the replacement plastic covers for the chain but they wear out quick and are a pain top put on. Then I noticed something on the chain...Made in china...Last year I used the API
I like no bar and a light stand. Forget the 23 pounders, I like one around 15-16. The cobra or viper (i forget) fits the bill nice for me.
