Thanks Veral for a great product
« on: August 30, 2009, 05:19:38 PM »
I have been tweaking on my revolver for about 8 months and finally got down to "fire lapping " my bore.I ordered Veral's lapping kit along with some push through slugs to monitor my progress.I ran 2 push through slugs through my  bore prior to lapping and found that the forcing cone end of the barrel was slightly smaller than the muzzle, which explains the leading I got in the first 1 to 2 inches of barrel.  I recieved my order promptly and followed Veral's instructions which are simple.  I fired 50 shots, all bullets were embedded with the lbt bore lap compound. I cleaned the gun out every 2 cylinders full to check progress. The cutting action of the compound clearly marks progress and my last push through slug told me that I was close but I hadn't made enough, so i will report more as far as accuracy when i get the next chance to go out.All in all i would say that this is a good way to do this as you us your own bullets which means i can use my heavy "longer" bullets , which do a better job of "straightening out your bore, also this saves you quite a bit of money as you can do quite a few guns with 1 tub of compound.I would recommend this product highly to anyone attempting this endeavour, it is rare to get products from someone who truly knows what they are doing, it is even more rare to get the kind of personal service that one gets from veral.jim

Yesterday i had enough time to fire some more lapping bullets, i gfinnished fireing them and brought the gun home to clean the bore.I have not done the final polishing process yet but the bore looks good an the push through slugs are easy to get from one end to the other. My next days off i will do some accuracy work and fire over a chronograph to see what differences have accumulated as a result.jim

The chronograph won't reveal any performance increase.  The important thing to check is reduction of leading problems and improvement in accuracy.  Both should be dramatic.

I have changed 2 other things as well and have left them out, i am using your lube now instead of lyman super moly and i have changed the size of my slugs as i have uniformed my chambers to handle bullets i cast with large front driving bands.Of course none of this is relevant to the bore lapping.I will let you know how it performs when i shoot it this weekend.

veral,

test firing this gun at a 75 yard target i was able to get 4 shots into about 3.5 inches and 2 fliers that opened up the group to about 6 inches which is good enough for me offhand. The bore had far less gunk in it and about 90 percent was lube in my estimate.i think i will fire a few more lapping bullets next session and call it good.jim

The gunk.  If it is lube, it is good gunk and ready to help the next shot.  If there is no lead accumilating, don't clean it out unless you see accuracy start to degrade.
To get the best idea of how accurate the gun is. rest the barrel on about anything.  Hold all the guns weight in your hands just as if you were shooting free hand, but let the barrel touch lightly enough so it stops all wiggle.   This kind of hold lets the gun move exactly like it would when shooting free hand, but allows you to get a very precise aim.  You'll find point of impact to be exactly the same as when free handing, which means you can use this hold on game in the field, resting on anything handy.  Padded rock, branch, fencepost, even a tight fence wire fairly close to a post.  Just don't let the side of the barrel touch anything.

Try it and your test groups will shrink and fliers dissapear.  Then you'll soon notice that your lapped barrel is printing in the same place relitive to the sights, every time.  Then you'll begin to notice what you did wrong when it doesn't, and correct it without any other teacher.   Then you'll notice that your shooting is improving faster than at any time in your life!

If a pistol can't throw anything but buckshot groups no one can learn how to shoot it well, but if the gun is capable of putting all shots in one hole, it will teach you something about how to shoot!  And there is 50 years of experiance in a nutshell!

If you've read very much in this forum you'll know my brag that guns which are set up right for cast, and use my bullet lubes on the bullets NEVER need cleaning.  The longest I've run without cleaning the barrel was somewhere around 25 years, and 5 of that was with the gun in storage.  Sounds like you have your gun and load right.  Try just wiping up the outside and workings of the action, but leaving the bore alone.  You'll fall in love with the ease of never messing with the bore, and no threat of ruining it with cleaning rod wear!

typically i leave the bore alone, i cleaned this for test purposes mostly.i just got a ruger convertable in 45 colt/45 acp and it needs the same treatment.I will probably be talking to you about a good bullet for both calibers, around 240 to 250 grain.this gun was bought mainly to show my kids how to shoot handguns and they like casting bullets so this would set them up.jim
