did the latest version of the 9422 have a side safety, could have sworn i saw one with a side saftey awhile back, have defenitly seen the centerfires with the side saftey and the tang saftey.

I've never seen, nor heard of, ANY Model 9422 with either a crossbolt or tang safety.

It could be that you're mixing them up with later Marlin 39a's, which have the added safety.

naw aint mistaken a 39as for a 9422 but i musta mistook a regular 94 or 92 for a rimfire model

I looked in the 2006 Winchester catalog and the 9422 didn't have a cross-bolt safety that year. I think that was the last year they were produced.

I have a 9422M without any additional safety (besides the half cock).  I don't know when it was made, and can't find a SN lookup for 9422s. It is an XTR model, and I am told they were made from the early 70s until 1989.

mystery solved: 1980.  And it is one of my favorite rifles.

I have owned several 9422M rifles. They are delightfull little guns, And lots of fun to use. Their usfull range in hunting is very narrow. Being too rough on most small game and not legal for big game in most states. Here on the "Rez" They are a popular deer & seal round.

While I have enjoyed all the 6-7 I have owned I never keep them long. I just don't have much use for a 22mag.

I'll add, the one area I feel the 9422M excells in is a true surival rifle setting. You can kill really big animals with one and it works for small & medium game as well. Not ideal for anything eateable, but useable for everything by a good marksman.

It is one of the best feeling rifles for woods walking.  And it is great for pest removal around the farm.  I just like mine.  And I am old enough now so I don't feel the need to have a good reason <VBG>.

Kieth L,  I'm like you just like the 9422M because it's comfortable and a squirrel shot in the head is very tasty.

I would agree for pests it's hard to beat. It's just here in southeast alaska our pests are a little large for a 22mag. I prefer a 223 for that here. For fox size game it's ideal.
